I'm thinking about running a 5K in June.....is it possible for someone like me who has never done it to do it with training? If so, what would you suggest?

Yes. Couch to 5k is 8 weeks... Plenty of time :)

To elaborate on the above post... C25k is a running program that slowly amps up the amount you run, so that in about 8 weeks time you should be able to run a 5k. It works by the method of interval training.. where you walk for a bit, then run for a short stretch, rinse and repeat.

You can get C25k apps on your smartphone, or if you google it you can find podcasts.

Yes! Running is more in the mind than the body.
Listen to some good upbeat music and take active rests, when you need to, walk for a few minutes then go back up to jogging speed, you really will get a second wind, and a third! When you have done this a few times, try to extend your running time a little. When you feel like you want to stop, challenge yourself to keep running until the next complete minute or the next complete 500m etc. I do this and often when I reach the next complete unit, I can keep going for 'just one more minute' for quite a while.

Don't do too much too soon though or you will put yourself off. Running three times a week is enough to see fitness gains, don't go too fast for too long. Varying your speed can keep it interesting, (I run at 9km/h going up to 10 in increments of 2 each minute, then work back down to 9 in increments of two and fast walk for a minute or two. Doing this twice then keeping going for a few more minutes at the end gets me to 5k).

Try to include some weight training too to strengthen your legs and to bring your upper body into the equation. Remember to stretch well at the end to prevent soreness the next day. You can do it! Good luck!
