I know random question to ask in here but I'm hoping someone can help answer! My husband was surprised with a Red eared slider turtle yesterday for his birthday! He's doing great and we went out today and bought him all kinds of things and he is in a 30 gallon tank. My only question was, I know their water is supposed to be kept warm and his is at about 80 right now. He has a heater in his tank as well. His tank is in my bedroom, and my Air conditioning unit is in the wall in here as well. Would it be okay to run my AC on 68 overnight? I just don't want to make my turtles water cold! Thanks!!

It depends if the heater in his tank will keep up with the strain. Hard to say without knowing the wattage.

Sorry I'm just clueless as to not only am I totally new to having a turtle, but this is my first pet and I'm 25 haha. I've have the AC on for about an hour and a half now and the temp. of his water hasn't changed at all.

No problem, I keep marine reef fish so I'm used to watching water temperatures. 30 Gallon is a good size tank so the water will take quite a while to cool down noticably. If it seems okay for now, don't stress over it and just check it hasn't dropped come morning. A couple of degrees variation would be normal in the wild, so your turtle should be fine, if a little bit slow if he's cold :P

If it is, check the power of the heater and upgrade :)

keep a close eye on it for a day or so, but you should be fine.

red-eared sliders like warm water, but they won't freeze to death overnight if the heater stops working or can't keep up. if it isn't eating (assuming it has been), it's probably too cold.

    here's a good site:
