Have you ever wanted to...

So, this morning when I was driving to work I saw this woman out jogging/walking. It was clearly day one or so for her. Anyway, I thought about MFP and how we are always encourging others and all....I totally wanted to roll down my window and give her a shout out, like "Way to Go" or "You've Got This!!!" coupled with a "thumbs up" or "high five"!!!

I did realize that this might not translate well or she'd think I was whacked and so I just drove on by....but seriously, it's funny that online we can totally say that to a "stranger" but IRL it would definitely be weird.

So, has anyone else ever wanted to give someone a "shout out?"

I realize, I could totally be alone here!

In New York we don't shout out to anyone for fear of it breaking out into a confrontation followed by a lengthy gun battle.

    Nah.

I walk/jog around the parking lot of an office complex near my house because it's a good hill and a woman who apparently had been noticing for a while (it's right around when they leave work) was waiting for a bus one day and said something. She guessed how much I'd lost and said I'd done a great job and keep it up. I've had random men in cars driving by slow down just to yell out the window stuff like, "Good job! Keep it up!" and apparently all my neighbors (townhouse complex) have been watching me for years and every once in a while, one of them says something.

As long as it's not a creepy, trying to hit on me kind of thing, I like hearing it.

I probably wouldn't do it, particularly if it looked like it was someone's first day. Sarcasm is too easy to misinterpret and most people are too weak-willed anyway. I'm sure (s)he was thinking, "This is hard and I can't believe I'm out doing this and I probably look so fat so I hope no one even notices me."

Even a, "Way to go!" as your driving by could be interpreted the wrong way.

One time this summer I was huffing and puffing while jogging and these people on bikes stopped to ask me for directions. When they were leaving the lady was like "keep it up you're doing great!" Definitely put a smile on my face.

^ definitely don't wanna come across as sarcastic, I'm thinking maybe if I'm out running...that might be the right time to "cheer" her on : )

I wouldn't in this case. I gave a thumbs up and smile to a biker who was pedaling up this incredibly steep, winding hill--we were already slowed down, though, because it was a narrow road. It was more of a, "Glad it's you and not me."

It comes down to the person. Would you say it if they were super fit? If so then sure...otherwise it's like you're acknowledging their lack of....and I think everyone out there just wants to be treated as any other runner.

Just slow down behind her, roll down the windows, and BLAST Eye of the Tiger.

Should give her a good boost.

Personally, I don't say anything unless I know the person, then I just am like
    "Yeah, (insert name here)!!"

Yes, and I agree, it is easier on here to cheer people on, but outside in 'real' life we are too shy maybe? When I was working every morning as I drove to work, I would see this older gentleman out walking, I watched this man get thinner, and always wanted to say "You are doing a great job" but never did. When I pass someone else in my neighborhood out walking, or jobbing a always say hi, but maybe I should start saying, good for you for getting out!!!

and BLAST Eye of the Tiger.

I started choking on my coffee when I pictured this. What if you matched her speed, and turned your head slowly towards her, with a complete straight face for the rest of the run.

I had that feeling just last night. There was a girl on the treadmill next to me and she was obviously working on some pre-running program. She was sweating and struggling and I was so proud of her and wanted to tell her to keep it up. I was like you though and decided she would probably decide I was nutsy.

I always do in my head. I don't have the guts to say it out loud.
