i am 2 days shy of 1 full month on mfp and eating better and even exercising which i rarely exercised before ( i hate to sweat its sticky, smelly and just nasty). i have only lost 6.2 lbs and i want to know if thats too much or too little to lose in my first month? let me give you some stats on me im 3 months shy of turning 39 , i am 5ft 10 in tall and started at 250.0. i know someone who started just a week before me and she is down 18lbs already but she is doing slim fast shakes for breakfast and lunch to me i think that shes taking it off too fast and her weight will likely come back and then some so im just wondering if im doing things right or if she is or if neither of us are? thanks for all the support everyone its always so much help to hear from others in the same boat as you are.

1% of your body weight a week for safe sustainable weight loss is a great goal.

Everyone is different... there isn't a set amount as to what you should be losing each month.

The guideline is usually 1.5-2 lbs a week. If your 6.2 lbs was from a four week month you are on track with 1.55lbs a week.

thank you both for your help. i am hoping that as our weather gets better to start walking more , maybe after dinner walks with hubby and his kids walking our 6 dogs. i want us to try and walk every night for 30 minutes and a fast/ semi fast pace not sure if they 7 year old can keep up with daddy and i if we walk too fast. hopefully the walking will help me to start losing more than 1.55 per week id like to be 2.5-3 lbs loss per week.

    It's not a race.

I lost 9lb in 4 weeks but I had a head start (eventually it will slow down to 1lb/week). I was already working out regularly (cardio and strength training) for almost a year. I started MFP last month to work on my diet - then the weight melted off. If I just started dieting and working out 5-6X/week, then only lose a few pounds - I would get disappointed and burn out right away.

Approach weight loss at a healthy sustainable pace.

i want it to be a long term change. ive always been a big girl but 2 years ago i found out part of the reason was im insulin resistant big time and probably have been all or most of my life . i want to reverse it before it becomes diabetes so i dont have to stick myself daily with some stupid needle(not that i dont like needles but because i dont want to have to depend on the shots to live). i am going on a huge trip with my hubby, his kids, mil, fil , grandpa in law, sil, bil , neice and nephew in just over a year . we are going to disneyland, california adventure, knotts berry farm, universal studios, san diego zoo and sea world. we will be seeing some of my family as well who i havent seen in a few years and i want to show them that i can and did do it . i want to be a new me and stop hearing all the time you have such a beautiful face if you would just lose 20-50 lbs . i want to be able to do all the walking neccisary at all the parks without feeling like im going to die .i want my aunt, grandma and cousins to see me and go DAAAM where did Dana go

You have a year to look HOT? Why settle for pretty face when you can be smokin'? Add me as a friend. I am trying to lose 60ish lbs by 2013. We can totally do this.
