Definitely start with walking (as well as swimming and aqua as it is not weightbearing on the joints).

I was 279lbs when I started and it took me 18 mins to walk a kilometre, I invested in a Heartrate monitor and began improving my fitness levels. I have walked several 5 and 6 km fun walks and improved my time per km from 18 mins to 11 and a half minutes!

My start was in September 2011 and since then I have lost just under 8kg and am now 262lbs.

I never learned to ride a bike so now I have bought one and intend to complete at least 1 fun duathlon and 1 fun Triathlon next year. It is never too late to start - I am 58 years old.

** The very best thing I did was purchase an HRM (heart rate monitor) - it really allows you to know exactly what your body is doing, how hard it is working and how many calories you are using - there are many posts on MFP around the merits of each brand and pricing***
