Ok, so why does weight lifting have to be so physically painful???? I know that the pain means its working...BUT, is it always going to be a painful process? Or is there ever time when the body get adapts to the workout regimen? I know that it is important to confuse the muscles and change the routine, I just want to know that if I want to remain toned after I lose all the weight that I want to lose and keep up with lifting weights if whether or not it will always be something to not look forward to the next day???

There, I hope I make sense....started to confuse myself a little there in the end....but, shoot away!

pain? pain is never a good thing.

what type of pain are you talking about, in your muscles or in your joints?

i lifted heavy pretty much all my adult life and the only time i've experienced what i would call pain is when i wasnt doing something correctly, especially if i wasnt using proper form..

Yes the muscle pain goes away somewhat. But, if you work right, you will always have it a little.

huh??? Pain is not a bad thing... There is a difference between pain involving an injury and Pain .. Acute pain is the bad pain... You may be talking about Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness or DOMS is the medical term used when dealing with the pain felt 12-48 hours after exercising. - The difference between acute pain and DOMS is that DOMS is usually harmless and usually a sign of growth, while acute pain is a serious threat to one's health.

As for being toned... That will come if you continue to lift and cut your weight!!! Protein helps preserve muscle...glutamine helps with recovery also

I love DOMS. It does get less severe after a couple months but if you are working out hard you will still get some soreness every so often. Im probably a weirdo but I like it.

well pain is relative which means explaining pain is also going to be relative, which is why i asked the OP what SHE meant by pain. obviously if we're not all on the same page by what she means then we're just speculating and blowing smoke up her butt with what's going to be a bunch of varied responses (ie some people will tell her to STOP, others will tell her to work through it.. all of which end up being pretty useless to the OP.

i personally dont include DOMS in the pain category mainly because i'm i consider it a good pain

but if the OP does mean DOMS, i'd suggest taking an ice bath/cold shower+hot shower/whirlpool post workout, doing a bit of easy cardio, yoga or something to get the blood flowing into that area+ using a foam roller the next day, making sure to get a good night's sleep after the workout, and eating a good protein meal after the workout

Well, judging by what 's been said. I must be experiencing DOMS and it sucks. I did the Bodypump class on Wednesday and its sense the has gotten worse. I know its not acute pain, because it just feels like muscle soreness, but jeesh! I could hardly put on my clothes or take a step without saying..."ow, ow, ow, ow." Either that or I must have a high tolerance for acute pain! I haven't done much to alleviate the pain like what's been suggested, the thought of stretching is making me scared but I know its necessary. Also, I'm the most sore when I wake up. Well damn! I was hoping that someone was going to say that pain eventually stops but, like some of you suggested, if your gonna be working out hard and doing it right, its gonna hurt every now and then....! Guess I have to learn how to like it, like mustgetmucsle.... but here's another question, is ok to run, or do cycling??? In other words should I just continue to be active or lay off it for awhile???? I don't want to lay off because that could be a week of doing nothing.....????

Yep Tuesday is leg day Wednesday is hurts-to-sit-down day. lol Depending on how sever the DOMS are I would try to get the blood flowing to that areas as soon you can.

I have done legs on Tue, and on Wed and Thur it hurt to walk and sit down but Fri I was feeling a little better so I jumped on the elliptical and worked out the pain. Really helps. I have heard stretching after your workout can help but for me the only thing that helps is heat, time and getting back in the gym. While Im waiting for my legs to recover I hit another muscle group. Been in a constant state of soreness on at least one part of my body for 8 months and still enjoying it. lol good luck hope you can work through it. It will get better as you get stronger.

if it's DOMS then you will get used to it. it's worse when you first start or when you have a huge increase in the weights.

what i do to avoid DOMS after a particularly horrendous lifting session is
    1)stretch right after
    2) take as cold of a shower as i can stand
3)hop in the gym's whirlpool. while in the whirlpool, i massage whatever i know will be most ailing me. if you cant get a whirlpool, the sauna or steam room also help
    4) go home and eat a good meal with good protein
    5) get a good night's sleep

the next day, if i'm still sore i'll go do something like the elliptical or the bike on a low resistance or an easy easy jog . definitely no weights the next day.

after awhile you get used to a certain amount of muscle soreness.

my least favorite activity with DOMS : using the bathroom  almost every muscle is involved in getting there, sitting, standing up, wiping and flushing
