Weight Loss Tips for Vegans

Hi!

I just wanted to check in and see if anyone had some weight loss tips for people with low fat vegan diets. I am so used to hearing about good dieting ideas that revolve around lean meats or higher levels of protein, that it's hard for me to get clear on a good fat-burning nutritional regimen for my vegan whole foods diet. I look forward to hearing some advice, and thanks in advance!

Hi! Are you buying pre-prepped stuff or making most of your stuff from scratch? If you want to up your protein, surely you can just add more legumes -- like, have a lentil salad rather than a green salad for lunch, for instance?
  • Do you have any cook books that specialise in veganism? I'm vegetarian and have a cookbook that not only has great recipes, but also plenty of tips on where to get the necessary nutrition from. It's called "the essential vegetarian cookbook" and would also be great help to vegans
  • Just had a read through of the book and it said protein isn't really a problem, as most people is western society over-do it anyway. But vitamin B12 is important and can be found in mushrooms and tofu. Iron can be found in soy products, leafy greens, breakfast cereals, dried fruit, nuts and seeds.
the amount of iron that you get from these foods is maximised when eaten with foods rich in vitamin c :)
This book actually has a pretty good info section for vegans
  • But if you are still concerned about protein, there is a page of simple food combinations that make up a complete protein. it includes:
    - red beans and rice
    - hummus and lavash bread
    - split pea soup and bread
    - chickpeas and couscous
    - bean salad and tabouli
    - peanut butter on toast
    - lentil burger on a bread roll
    - felafel and pita bread
    - baked beans on toast

I'm mostly cooking from scratch. I love legumes for protein but they are pretty high in calorie. For instance, I had a cup of chickpeas in my dinner tonight and that was 240 calories. I do like using those, though!

Thanks for the tips about food combining and B12! I definetely need to remember to take my B12 supplement... and it's good to hear I don't really need to worry about protein. So far, my diet logs show that I'm meeting my protein goal anyway. Woohoo!

Are there any other foods or meals that tend to be helpful during a diet? I'd like to eat the right foods to maximize my weight loss...
