How can I do chin ups???

Hi,
I want to get into doing chin ups as it is a great exercise for my archery but the bar I have got is on my X-Factor machine and for me at 5ft 4in I am at full stretch, tip-toes!
I really can only get a tiny bit of movement upwards from this fully stretched out position and I have not got anything to stand on, I assume I would have to take my feet off whatever I am standing on (box etc) to get the right effect and as I can't hold my own weight I am at a loss on how to do it!!
I would appreciate ANY help with this!

You can do assisted chin ups by standing on a box or a chair. Basically, just use your legs as much as you need in order to keep moving. If you can't arrange this on your machine, you might try using something else for chin-ups. Also, you can climb or jump until you are in the full up position, you can then do the negative, or down motion, very slow and controlled. This will help a lot, and eventually you will be able to do the up part as well.0

I actually had a go yesterday using a resistance band (got the idea on a website), I managed to do 1 proper one with my chin higher than the bar then got 2 more out without going above the bar, I thought it was a good idea to keep going even though I was not getting over the bar as I am getting the hang of the technique.
I plan on trying to do at least one proper one each night.
The band made a hell of a difference, I felt much more in control and it was still a hell of a challenge, but I was stoked that I could actually do one!0
