Lower leg problem...Shin splint or muscle---Help!

So I noticed the other day after doing the 30Ds that my lower leg on the outside from just under the knee to about mid-calf seemed overtight and sore. Thought it was just a muscle issue, but I did the shred again yesterday and it was extremely painful after. Trying to put weight on it caused a sharp pain in the area an inch or so below the knee. I iced it immediately and then applied heat later, but its still very sore. Any thoughts on what this could be? Muscle or shin splint? What about using compression socks, would it be worth the cost as Ive seen they can be a little bit costly. Anyone on MFP experience something similar and have a solution? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!!:embarassed:

Same exact thing I'm going through. I went to my Dr and he ordered me to rest my leg for 2 weeks. So I'm going back and doing Levels 1 and 2 without the leg exercises and lifting heavier weights.
I also have to get an x-ray and see an Orthopedist.. still waiting for the insurance referrals on those. I'll try to pop back on and let you know what the Ortho says.
I will say that after 2 days of resting my leg, the pain has gone away. I'm SO tempted to just go ahead and try a jumping jack or 2 and see what happens.. but I am going to follow Drs orders.. at least until after I get the x-ray and see the specialist.
  • Thank you! I really don't want to start over because I'm seeing results. On the other hand, I kind of enjoy walking, lol

Stress fractures (ie. shin splints) don't happen overnight / 2 nights, they're a chronic injury from over-exertion over months.
and that pain is usually on your actual shin bone, not in your fibula / peroneal area.

Tight + sore = muscular origin pain, probably over-exertion, but I can't diagnose something over the next (obviously).

Rest it, follow RICE principle - particularly E.

If it doesn't resolve then go start doing all the fancy diagnostics tests.

LOL! I feel the same way! I was so afraid of "undoing" all the good exercise habits I've formed and like you, I'm seeing great results from 30DS. Last night I tried Biggest Loser Weight Loss Yoga. It's yoga so it's no impact and ost of it is straight leg stretches which don't hurt my knee/shin/whatever-it-is-injury. And I was sweating like crazy!
Try going back to L1 of 30DS but up the weights. I'm using 5 lbs now and while that may be a laugh to some, to me its hard! Especially on the military presses and those horrible things where you raise your arms from your sides to eye level.
  • Yes, that's prob sound advice. Its just sooo maddening! I started and really want to finish, but I may have to find another way for right now.
