Question about BMI

At work yesterday, the nurses came around with this little hand held gadget that tells your body fat % and your BMI. So my body fat is 28.6 which is way down from where I started this journey, but the BMI is 33.6, which is way down also. The nurse almost had a heart attack herself, she said I am losing weight too fast and that my body is probably losing muscle and holding onto the fat. And of course, I have that crazy mindset and I let what she said get to me.
So I called another friend that is onto fitness and told her the situation. She asked me some basic questions about fatigue and how many calories a day (and this is someone who sees me regurlarly) and she said she thinks my calorie intake is too low.
Okay, so here is my question, How do I know if my body is storing fat and using my muscle as energy?
AND How important is that number for your BMI?
