I’m training for my first mini marathon. I know I need some sort of fuel between the miles. I live in a small town & there isn’t a nutritional store anywhere close. I think I'm going to put a banana or apple in my mailbox so when I run, I can have fuel every so many miles. Its 3 miles to the end of my road & back. If I eat a banana every 3 or 6 miles will that be fine? Any suggestions? Please & thank you!

ps…, I am always very healthy eater & using the Hal Higdon’s Half Marathon Training program.

What do you mean by a mini marathon? Do you mean a half marathon? There is no such thing as a mini marathon.

Generally on my long slow runs, I will take in water and Gu about an hour in when my runs are going to go longer than an hour. if you are going to have a banana, I would suggest maybe half after an hour, but that all depends on how long your run is going to be. if you are just doing an hour, it isn't really necessary to eat anything during. I do eat before my long runs, but that is usually half a banana and a cup of coffee.

Nutrition is kind of individualized to the person. What works for one may not work for another. The only way to find out is to try the bananas on your next run and see how they work.

Another idea that is available anywhere is hard candies that you can carry in your pocket. Anything with around 100 calories of carbs is good every 30 minutes or so on the long runs.
  • carry some jelly beans as well , they are a great instant sugar hit and will help get you over the line when you are fading. carbo load the night before and have a light breakfeast an hour before the race. good luck..

I do a bottle of half gatorade and half water after an hour. That seems to be enough for me. I know people who eat their kids' fruit snacks too instead of the more expensive sport jelly beans and they say that works good too. I just didn't like the time it takes to chew them.

I would love to eat candy, but most sugary candy is a migraine trigger for me. (Sorry, I forgot to mention that.) I could see how my head can handle gummy bears. I’ve ate a few of those without adverse affects.

ps…, It’s the Indy 500 Mini Marathon; 13.1 miles long. My first marathon...
