I want to add strength training but I don't care for my local gym and it is a bit expensive $80.00 a month. I have a large basement with plenty of room to work out. I guess what I need is suggestions on where to start. What equipement do I need and are there any good books or videos.

My favorite book ever is You Are Your Own Gym. It's a series of programs based entirely on body weight exercises. You can follow one of several 10-week programs, or make your own. Very little equipment is needed, and you probably won't need to buy anything other than the book.
I just finished the first 10-week program, and the results are pretty awesome. Not only have I gained a lot of strength, my muscles are looking pretty impressive. Can't wait to start the next 10-week program. I really recommend it.0
