This might be a dumb question but....

Is homemade granola (oats, seeds, puffed rice) considered part of the "bad carbs"? I want to go bad carb-free for a few days to boost my system out of it's plateau, and I have a huge craving for some homemade granola. I'm sticking to carbs like fruits, veggies, and leans meats, but I need your opinion. Is the combo of oats, seeds, and puffed rice considered part of the bad carb family?

Thanks for the input!

Moderately you should be fine, the puffed rice is pretty much just calories. Have you made your granola with oats and like finely sliced almonds and some freeze dried fruit bits (they won't get your granola soggy).

I don't know what you mean by "bad carbs". I know there are complex carbohydrates and simple carbohydrates, but I don't know about bad ones.

this is what I found - the list of "bad" (simple) carbs, didn't see one oat mentioned, or seeds and puffed rice so enjoy your granola! http://www.weightlossresources.co.uk/calories/calorie_counting/high_content_food.htm
  • Thanks! And by bad carbs, I did mean foods that are gluten heavy like breads and pastas.
  • I'm really not an idiot...I just never did well with remembering the difference between simple and complex carbs. Science was never my area.
  • Oh and about the granola. I'm not a big nut person, but I love the butters (yeah, I'm THAT person). My granola generally has oats, seeds, puffed rice, "in the raw" brown sugar, in place of oil and butter I use "I Can't Believe It's Not Butter", natural honey, and a drizzle of dark chocolate and almond butter. So tasty. For me, it's allowing me the craving of chocolatey-nutter-buttery goodness all in one place without the guilt factor of too much fat, sugars, and calories.

going by that logic, fruit would be a bad carb. White flour is a complex carb which again going by your logic would be ok. See the problem, and why i said there really isn't any bad carbs just bad diets.
  • Thanks for making me feel bad about what I choose to eat. It's been working since January, I think I'll do what I please and stay on my diet!
