okay so this is my first day on this site. i have started my life style change about a week and a half ago, and am down close to 10 pounds. sounds like alot, but i was 320lbs. 5'10, and not in bad physical shape. i am trying to set goals for myself, and i know your only supposed to lose 1-2 pounds a week, but figuring with the extra water weight i have, is it to big of a goal to want to lose 40 pounds in the next 3 months? i have done it before, and i wasnt as big as i am now, just trying to drop around 100lbs by january or so, to go into the military. thanx for the advice, and any good ideas on lunchs for work? best meats for sandwichs or something like that, the diet is always the hard part for me. i love working out, just hard to find foods i think are safe. thanx again

I think if you cut portion size, fast and processed foods, limit sodium and eat whole fresh foods you will see results.
Lots of fresh and frozen veggies, no salt or sauces. Moderate amount of fresh fruits, Fresh meats and fish. Whole grain lower calorie breads, tortilla's and pitas. Instead of lunch meats make extra meat when you cook and use it for sandwiches and salads. low fat cheese ( again portion control).

40 pounds in 3 months is indeed a very big goal. Are you including the 10 you already lost? So 30 more pounds to go in 3 months?

That first 10 drops fast, but it's mostly water. It can be done, but 40 in 4 months is probably more reasonable. Don't set yourself up for disappointment, instead set yourself up to be very pleased that you hit your goal early :)

Most lunchmeat is very high in sodium, which won't help with water weight. There are some lower-sodium lunchmeats that are still pretty high in sodium, but better choices. Target has a Honey Ham that's 55% less sodium than their regular Honey Ham and it tastes very good. Cooking up a bunch of fresh chicken breasts on the grill, then thin slicing them or making them into a veg-heavy/mayo-light chicken salad would be a better option for a sandwich I think.

Chnkytim42, I have two questions for you:

    1. How much do you have to weigh in order to join the military?

    2. Please don't get offended with this question. I apologize to you in advance, if I offend you, because that's not what I'm trying to do. Question: Are you trying to lose scale weight or fat? Scale weight loss and fat loss aren't the same thing.

After I know your answers, then I will reply to your questions.

Honestly no for your size and gender it's definitely doable. I lost exactly 40 pounds in just over three months (just LOL when I looked it up) I went from 137.2kg on July 21st last year to 119.1kg on October 27th.

If you were smaller I'd say no, but if you eat right and exercise you should be OK. Don't be disappointed if it doesn't happen. There's nothing wrong with having ambitious goals (my first goal was to be under 100kg by Xmas last year. I'm still not there) as long as you realize they're ambitious and are not disappointed if you don't achieve them. It's a life time journey and just because you're not at this weight on this date does not mean you are failing.

i'm trying to lose fat, i want to join around january even if it's delayed entry for a bit, but i want to be close yo my goal by then. and i appreciate all the advice, i know i'm setting bigger goals, but for me i think it pushes me a little bit more, if i settle with a pound or 2 a week i'll reach my goal and slack, if i have to push i feel like it will give me less of a chance to let up, so i will be less likely to slip.

My favorite sandwich lately has been a spicy Boca meatless chicken patty (160 cal) on a Trader Joe's fiber bagel (220 cal) with spinach, a touch of A1 and less than half an oz of goat cheese. Goat cheese, because that's what was in the fridge then, but I'll probably switch it over to Laughing Cow. It's all protein, fiber and carbs, so it's super filling--for me anyway--and about 1/4 of my daily fats. I'm very short, so you're probably working with more calories, but if your appetite is also bigger, I'd suggest having it with as many carrots as you can possibly tolerate to fill you up. I wouldn't recommend having this everyday or more than once in the same day, but it's darn tasty.
