Everyone of my personal training clients has asked me (usually more than once) ‘What’s foods am I NOT allowed to eat?’ The answer has always been the same.
“There are no restrictions.”
Their look of surprise comes with out fail.
“But I thought this was a diet,” they all say. It used to be painful to answer them but now I realize my response is actually a favor.
“You thought wrong,” I say, “diets don’t work. I sell a service that changes lives, not a diet.”
“Oh wow!” Every client replies, “how long does it take?”
“THAT, is up to you.”
Its not easy to relay the truth to someone, especially when the truth involves work. I’ll be the first to admit how much I hate loading a dishwasher but the reality is simple: dishes can’t wash themselves. The thought of leaving the dishes overnight doesn’t sound so bad except for one small factor…they will be there in the morning and no better than before. In a strange way I think there is a similar parallel in the diet industry.
Doesn‘t matter what the magic gimmick is… ‘Don’t eat carbs!’ or ‘Stay away from processed foods!’ The end result is typical: the diet is considered, the whacky concept embraced, certain foods are black listed, umpteen hours later CANT GET THE CHEESECAKE OUTTA MY MIND! See, the problem remains only this time, its no better than before.
“So I can eat whatever I want?” My clients attempt to clarify.
“Whatever.”
“Even cheesecake??”
“Even cheesecake.”
“And lose weight???”
“And lose weight.”
“You’re lying!”
This is where the look on my face changes. ’Yes,’ I think to myself, ’I’m lying to you because if you do what I recommend and it DOESN’T work I’ll get all the numerous referrals I’m used to getting.
“Look,” I reply, “just because you’ve been lied to in the past doesn’t mean you’re being lied to right now…”
“Do you eat cheesecake?”
I shake my head, “no.”
“Liar!”
“I eat Snickers…” There are few things more difficult to get used to than being called a liar by someone asking for help but I will never blame someone for doing so, especially someone who wants to improve their health and fitness level. After all, they’re being lied to every day. ’Take this pill..’ they hear on the TV, ’don’t eat these foods…’ If you think about it long enough its like a recipe for weight gain: pop the pill…step on the scale…nothing.’ Pop another pill, walk past the treadmill, step on the scale…nothing. ’Don’t eat the cheesecake…’ Mmmm, cheeeesecake. Cheesecake is my FRIEND. These pills suck!
Believe me, it sounds like cynicism, but its really just a living, breathing, viscous cycle. And it doesn’t have to be weight loss pills (although billions are sold every year) it could be some other gimmick. Not gonna name names but a weight you shake to get into shape comes to mind. And the cycle tends to repeat, and every so often re-invent itself. I remember when the calorie blocking supplement was 180 pills loaded with ground shell fish, now the new thing comes in a shaker bottle and gets sprinkled over every meal. ’Eat whatever you want,’ the slogan usually goes, ’but DON’T eat it without the sprinkles.’…Great, another way to forbid someone from something. What happens if you forget your shaker at home?
‘AHHHH!!! I left my sprinkles!! Ahhh!!!!’
There is a better way, one where you aren’t being forbidden from anything in any way.
“Choice,” I tell my clients, “I help you develop a way to make better choices.”
“How do I do that? I want cheesecake!”
“And you can have cheese cake.”
“Oh YEAH??” They say with suspicious eyes, “How MUCH cheesecake?”
“THAT, is the question…”0
