Trainer advice about dieting

I joined a gym and was talking to one of the trainers (not mine) about what my goals are. I told him I wanted to lose about 100 pounds and tone so I didn't end up with saggy skin. This is what he told me:

Losing weight is 80% diet & 20% exercise
Cardio will help you lose the most weight
The best diet to follow is the Ketogenic diet

While I agree with the first two statements, I'm having a problem buying into the fact of putting my body into ketosis would be a good thing. Has anyone tried this and to what extent? I have an appointment with my Internist on Tuesday and plan to ask him about it.

Ask him when he became a licensed dietician.

With regards to the first statement I agree. But you can definitely lose weight with strength alone and look better. And diets are temporary. Lifestyle eating is what people are trying to find and maintain. So any diet IMO is a waste of time. Have a calorie deficit, meet your essentials, and if you have calories left over eat what you like to eat.

Not a trainer, but have had success here so I'll give you my opinion (you can take it or leave it as you see fit).

The first comment is absolutely right. Weight loss is all about the intake. Fitness is about exercise. Looking great is about fitness.

The ketogenic diet is not necessary. I have lost almost 40 lbs without low-carb. I tried low carb at first, and could not stick to it. Instead, I eat essentially what I want combined with more vegetables, fruit, and whole foods than before while keeping my total intake below my TDEE (total daily energy expenditure). I weight train 3x per week and, unfortunately, have lost lean mass, but I am hoping to slow that down and get my body fat percentage down from here on out.

I wrote a post with some information that might be helpful to you: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/470367-tips-for-newbies

    Good luck to you :)

I agree with all the above. You might have success on a keto diet, but you don't need a keto diet to have success.

I talked to my internist today and he told me that what I am doing is just fine & with my liver disease, putting it through the "stress" of a "wacky" diet wouldn't be good. Just to keep watching my calories and not to come too far below my net calories daily (advised to stay within 200...oof). It felt good to get the validation from him that I was going about this correctly.

    Onward & upward!

    Thanks everyone for your input.

Another reason why "trainers" should not be performing unlicensed (and often illegal) dietary counseling--and clients should not be listening to it.
