Hi, I just got the position for the asst. coach for a high school girls soccer team. The school is inner-city and the program is struggling. I don't know about each of my girls exact nutrition (which i am trying to find out) but i see kids in the school eating chips and pop for breakfast, pizza and fries for lunch ect. I want my girls to understand what they are putting in there bodies. The first thing I am going to talk to them about is WATER! I want to be able to give them examples of healthy breakfasts and lunches they can have for cheap at home... (i don't want anything crazy because i want realistic things these girls will eat)... does anyone have suggestions for me? If you are a nutitionist I would love to message you personally about this! Any help would be great! Thanks.

I am not a nutritionist, but I did Weight Watcher's at 15 yrs old. I know that age needs an additional dairy serving, totaling 3 servings. I also know the calorie range will be slightly higher since they are still growing and developing. The younger the students, the higher the calories, though not necessarily by leaps and bounds.
I would think though, that teaching them to eat healthy will be beneficial no matter what. If you teach them to view food as fuel for their active bodies, then they will see that the calories (energy) contained in a greasy cheeseburger are not as efficient as those found in a chicken breast, brown rice, and broccoli. I would definitely suggest teaching them about food with volume, like grapes vs. raisins, to keep themselves satiated. At that age, it would likely also be beneficial to teach them the effects of alcohol on the body, and why it is an inefficient expenditure of calories, not to mention illegal at their age.... I wish you the best with your program! How wonderful, especially knowing that our country is fighting a major obesity epidemic, and our children are getting hit with the brunt of it. I am hoping to contact schools in our local area to see if we can partner together to put together fitness and health oriented programs to better serve the children's dietary needs.0 -

Good for you. I'm not a nutritionist, but I'm an educator & my grown kids were involved with high school coaches who instilled the importance of good nutrition. Because they wouldn't listen to me.0

No guarantees. I don't know much about what you have in mind, but at least here are some places to start!
