Does Healthy Eating Limit Your Ability to Indulge?

My goal is to become fit and healthy. Over the past few months, I've completely changed my eating habits to incorporate a lot of vegetables, lean protein, and FAR less sugar than my normal diet.

Last night was a bit of a celebration and I had a very rich meal of short ribs, mashed potatoes, and wine. However, today my stomach feels like it's inside out. I just want to curl up in a ball and lay in bed all day.

I prepared this meal myself, so I know there's nothing I'm allergic to and those 3-hour short ribs are definitely not undercooked.

Does anyone know if adopting a healthy diet limits your ability to process rich foods?

I'm not sure if it limits your ability, but after eating a bunch of healthy, good foods for a long time, your stomach is very likely to be shocked when you put a bunch of greasy, salty stuff it never normally has in it. It's sometimes the opposite. People who go from eating spare ribs every night to just fruits and veggies and lean meats all of a sudden can also have stomach problems.

I feel the same way the day after I indulge. Try to drink a lot of water and eat light today.:flowerforyou:

I don't think it limits your ability, you are just more aware of what your body does with certain foods and how it metabolises it. Also, it could be a subconcious feeling. I love to eat veggies and fruits and stuff but I also love to indulge myself without feeling guilty about it. I know I CAN tell the difference when I eat ligh and when I eat heavy. My body feels a slugish and my energy levels drop but I HAVE to have those indulgences just because it's feels soo good....lol
  • lolololololol... im the same way.. i have a cheat "day" once a month... i eat whatever i want during this day... i ALWAYS end up with a BADDD stomach ache... i threw myself on the ground and told my mom I was dying.. she laughed at me and then made me some tea... drink camomile tea... it will cure you completelly and almost instantly, i promise.

I eat pretty indulgent almost every day with the Paleo eating plan and only eating proteins, fats, and lots of vegetables. I eat a lot of coconut oil and butter in which I make some really rich and indulgent sauces.

I feel much lighter and my belly is a lot flatter.

Was the meat bought from the grocery store?

    YES.

I don't see it as indulging, though, I see it as treating my body badly.

I feel like utter crap if I have pizza or beers and fries out with my friends. Because my body is more used to HEALTHY foods and I just don't think my body is MEANT to sustain on crap foods. So I don't look at it as a negative.......I see it as a positive for how I normally eat.

It has totally happened to me. My fiance and I were just discussing this last night, after we finished a not-so-healthy, heavy dinner. I haven't eaten that type of food (or that much food in one sitting) in over a month. Still feeling the effects now :( I've been great about sticking to my calories and hitting all my other nutrients, so I figured one meal wouldn't hurt. WRONG!

@ hmguess--this is exactly where I am. Although I enjoyed the meal, feeling like this all day is totally not worth it.

Thank you all for your feedback!

I have the complicating factor of IBS, so take it with a grain of salt, but absolutely yes. I was brought up eating "healthy", have gained weight purely from over-eating healthy stuff, and a rich meal (like, eating out) always makes me sick. My partner (who is skinny as a rake, at 165 cm and 54 kg...) is the same. French food actually makes him extremely ill, just 'cause there's too much fat and crap in it for his stomach.

I handle it by eating less of the rich stuff -- enough to enjoy, not enough to get sick -- and load up on salad. >_o

good call Flynn MacCalli--moderation plus salad to clean out the rest.

It'll be a long time before I fully associate indulgence with treating my body like ****. But, the tide is turning.
