I have been working out for six nights a week for 3 weeks now, and I still get extremely out of breath? Is this normal? And if so, does it ever get any better?

What have you been doing and how long is each session?

If you're pushing yourself hard enough, then yes, you can always be out of breath - when you first start exercising you won't have to do much to get out of breath. But it is also possible that you have mild asthma or something. It's difficult to tell without more information.

To me it sounds like you are over doing it. This is just a personal, not professional, opinion.

Maybe you need to have a few active rest days, and lessen the intensity of the workouts. You have to remember that your muscles pull oxygen from your body and when that happens your lungs have to work harder.

Also, make sure you are drinking lots of water too. It will help.

If it persists though I'd see a doctor. You could have an underlying medical reason.

If you always really push yourself to your max, you will always end up getting out of breath! When you are new, it's even more frequent, but it should improve over time unless you have a medical issue causing it. If you are concerned, see a doctor!

Cut back to 3-4 days a week if you're weight training.
overdoing it isn't going to get you results any faster.

out of breath typically would be a good thing, but if you're seriously gasping for air and near passing out, scale back

Are you holding your breath while you exercise? Breathing into your ribs and not your diaphragm?
  • So far, I have been doing my elliptical for 30-45 minutes a night 4 nights a week, and aerobics for 45 minutes to an hour on the other two nights. I think it may just be that I am that out of shape, a few years ago when I lost a lot of weight I was working out way harder than I am now and I was fine. Guess I just have to get back in the swing of things. I am not gasping for air, guess maybe I am just getting a good workout! Thanks for all the opinions everyone!! :)
