Where is the extra sugar coming from?

Hi!
I'm pretty new to this page, this is the first time I've used the "chat" tool, I'd like to find some friends/support on here eventually...I'm sure that really helps! Anyway, for the past month I've been logging in my food each day. I eat, what I think, is a very healthy diet. But it seems that always by lunch I'm "negative" in my sugar category (meaning, I've already passed my limit). I can't figure out why, I don't want to eat too much sugar. But I don't know how to make my meals/diet any healthier!

Here is a sample of what I eat just about every day. Egg whites and some fruit for breakfast, almonds and an apple for snack, and salad and salmon for lunch. This is an example, but it usually doesn't vary much from this. Sometimes I'll have high fiber granola with fat free milk for breakfast, and I figured on those days maybe the sugar is coming from the granola. But on the days that I don't eat that, I'm still "over my limit" by lunch.

Does this happen to anyone else? Does it really matter if it does happen? I'm just assuming that it's a bad thing, just because you want to limit sugar intake while trying to lose weight, right? If you know anything about this, please let me know! Thanks all!
-Sarah
By the way, I've lost 8 pounds so far, just with healthier eating (no exercise yet) and I love this website!

Fruit has a lot of sugar. Whether you think that's bad or not, depends on your philosophy. I try to keep my sugars low but if they are only high because of milk and/or fruit, I don't worry about it as much. But if you have insulin issues, you may want to limit all sugar and not just junk sugar.

Yeah - it's the fruit and the milk and the granola bar. They are healthy options so, like MacM said, unless you have insulin issues I wouldn't worry too much about it. Good job on your loss sofar!!

Hi and welcome to the message boards!

I agree with the other people on here - the sugar is coming from the fruit. I've heard from several health/fitness people that we should get about 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day and it sounds like you're eating a very healthy diet. I wouldn't worry about it - it's a healthy sugar! Just make sure you're getting enough protein too! Which it sounds like you are!

these are are complex carbs so don't worry about it. If you notice that the things that are causing you to go over are refined sugars, that when i would cut back.

    Vegetables have natural sugars
    Fruit has natural sugars
    Nuts, natural sugars
    whole grains, natural sugars........

How much you can handle is dependant upon your individual body...............

Me, I can not handle higher carb veggies, or fruits..........so bananas, carrots are out for me.

I can only have enough tomato and onion to add some flavor due to the high natural sugar content.

Sugar is sugar, your body metabolizes fructose (fruit sugar) the same as it does sucrose (table sugar)............so it doesn't matter if you eat chocolate or fruit, it should be eaten with some protein to slow down the digestion so that you won't get the roller coaster of a blood sugar crash.
