Reluctant to lose the "training wheels" - any advice?

Hi everyone (ladies especially) -

I started strength training at a gym with a trainer last summer, and lost 20 pounds pretty quickly and developed some confidence. Unfortunately, I really can't afford to continue the relationship, and my initial plan was to do the trainer to "learn the ropes" so to speak so that I'd be more ready to do it on my own.

Well...

I'm still nervous about that part. I don't know how I'm going to figure out what to do, or how to motivate, and actually I get kind of sheepish about even going in to pick up a weight at my local gym.

Anyone have any advice for how to get on a solid program at home? I did order a copy of the new rules of lifting for women since I've heard good things about it, but I don't know that having a book is going to drive me to new levels of boldness in front of people who actually know what they're doing.

I'm doing stage 1 of the book and I felt the same way the first time I did my workout at the gym. I didn't now how to operate one of the pieces of equipment. What I did was go during a quieter time so you don't have as many people around and the pressure of someone waiting for your piece of equipment. Then I even asked one of the guys to show me how to use that particular piece and I just explained that I was doing a new program and wanted to make sure I had correct form and he demonstrated it for me. I have found the guys to be really helpful actually.
