I'm doing the Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred which I follow up with 20-30 of cardio on an elliptical. I do my workout after work, before dinner and usually eat dinner after. I'm looking for something to give me a boost before my workout. What's a good workout drink to get me going? I don't drink energy drinks and avoid caffiene.

  • Ever try a protein drink?! I make a chocolate whey protein drink, with Fat free over the moon milk and a small scoop of peanut butter, helps recover your muscles after your workout. Its refreshing tastes like a frappe!!

Anything with B6 and B12 should get you focused for your workout. Or if you don't drink caffeine at all, you might even want to try a cup of coffee.

Beta alanine can be used as well, but it makes your skin crawl. I kind of like this feeling though

Haha, ya I just realized how that came out. I meant like, if they didn't have a tolerance to caffeine, a cup of coffee would be really effective

Why do you avoid caffeine? Is it a personal preference, or is there a medical reason? Caffeine actually has some strong fat burning abilities when consumed pre-workout, as it boosts efficiency of the fat burning system, allowing your body to burn more fat while extending your supply of glycogen, helping you work out harder, longer.

Green tea will do the same as coffee
and if you don't put anything in it like most people do with coffee...its even better
my preworkout "meal" is usually one of these:
green tea - no milk or sugar
    a yogurt cup
    protein powder and water
    or nothing
today I had nothing and found I had a lot of energy during my run
    but everyday is different...

I've been off caffiene for 3 months now. I've had insomnia for some time and once I quit caffiene I'm sleeping much better. Of course, some of that may be attributed to my working out.

That's a good reason to avoid it.

To be totally honest, there is no certain pre or post workout meal or drink required. As long as you are getting adequate nutrition throughout the day, then you should be fine. If you need a quick snack before working out because you feel like you're dragging, I'd go with something that's relatively quick carbs. Milk or yogurt if you prefer, maybe some fruit, even a peanut butter sandwich. Just keep the calories in line with your daily goals, and you should be good.

Anything that tells you you need to have it pre or post workout, or anything that's labelled specifically as "pre workout" or "recovery" is quite honestly just a marketing ploy to get you to buy it. It serves no real practical purpose beyond that.

Thanks all. I think I'll avoid the drink and as tigersword stated, try a quick snack.

I eat lunch at 12:00 and workout at 5:30 after work and eat a light dinner after my workout.....I drink a protein shake...I use Syntrax Matrix (I buy it at Max-Fit) ...Strawberry Cream mixed with water it is delicious! It holds me through a 45 spin class and an hour of yoga! Only 110 calories and 2 gram of carbs.
