Love your post, and needed this today really.

    Thanks for saying that!

I am not reading the replies anymore. Due to negativity and criticisms but I'm glad you got something positive out of it.

I understand what you are saying in that the numbers aren't the most important thing/the end goal which really is feeling good and being healthy. For me, however, the numbers are a motivating factor, they provide a reality check and they also keep me focused.

The numbers provide a logical way for choosing option A over option B and hopefully encourage better food choices. I choose to use 280 calories on my daily chocolate bar - yum - but think that "spending" hundreds of calories on a burger and fries would be such a waste. Placing a value on a food item allows me to decide what is worth splurging on and what I should just pass on because the calorie expense is just too great for something that I won't REALLY enjoy.

I use my rowing machine daily and always record time, distance and strokes - that motivates me to do just a bit more than I might feel like doing - if I have done say 654 strokes, and feel like quitting, I'll push on to the round number of 700. I use a FitBit and last night I marched in place in my pj's because I only had only another 650 steps to reach my goal for the day so I got just that little bit more exercise on record.

I think that it really depends on your personality type. Some of us just like data and find it useful.
