I have been dating my boyfriend for over 5 years. We have been (gasp!) living together for three years. He finally told his family we were dating when we had been together for 3 years.
Seems really long to date before meeting the parents and you wonder why???
......because (gasp!)...I am Catholic and he is SIkh.
So after five long, difficult but amazing years, he finally told me yesterday, we were going to meet his parents tuesday night!!!! Right after I work out!
I am scared!!! I have never ever met a boyfriend's parents...since he's been my most serious relationship.
I have my outfit planned, I know I want to buy his mother flowers....HELP I need ADVICE!!!

First of all, take a deep breath..... exhale. It will be okay. No matter what happens just be the great you that the bf has kept around for 5 years. All of the Sikh I know are cool. Of course I wasn't dating their daughter.....
You will be fine.0 -
Congratulations! Cross-cultural relationships are always complex. I'm truly happy for your progress with him. Meeting the parents is a big step.
It is customary in Indian cultures to take sweets when visiting. They may make more of an impact than flowers. If you have a local Indian store/restaurant, a small box of Indian sweets will bode well. Ask him what his parents like. If he tells you not to fuss about things like this, insist that it is important to you. Parents across all cultures enjoy getting gifts for no reason.
If his parents are conservative, ensure your wardrobe is appropriate. I love dresses! But if I'm meeting conservative elders, I always tone it down a bit. Find out whether they like to be addressed casually or formally. Little things go a long way.
Lastly, be confident and be yourself. He loves you for very good reasons and his parents need to see those reasons too. I'm sure you'll be able to charm them as you did him.
Good luck!0 -
Don't stress about the cultural / religious differences. It really bothers me when people make a big deal about it.
Go in there as a person, not a Catholic (I am not saying that you should disregard your religion, just don't make a big deal about it). Just like some people are different races, some people have different religions... WHO CARES??? Just wish everyone would get along.0 -
Thanks guys for the advice. Super nervous but excited! This is a huge hurdle in our relationship.0
