Running shoes: New or Old?!

I welcome advice from any runners out there!
I am long overdue for a new pair of running shoes . . . My current pair is a few years old and have been very gracious to me through my last 3 half marathons. I can definitely tell they're beginning to break down along with their Superfeet insoles. Here's my question: I've got a half marathon coming up in May then a full marathon in June . . . is it better to push through both of those with my current shoes since that's what I've been training in or is it better to get new shoes (and Superfeet insoles) NOW and hope I can break them in well enough by race day??

I'd replace them now if there's a risk they end up too worn down to use on race day. I think there is plenty of time to get used to new ones.

If you get fit for the right pair of shoes and they are a good pair, they won't need to be broken in. And even if they did, a month is plenty of time. Get new shoes. And get fit for them.

Ok. Thank you! I've definitely been thinking about investing the time and money into a "proper" fitting . . Looks like it would definitely be worth my while. Thanks again!

I second the fact that the proper fit means no break in time. I got my runnin evals done (I got it done three different places because I wanted to check consistency). And then spent almost a week trying and re-trying my top three shoe choices before deciding on the on the pair I got. But I bought them and went for a five mile run that night, four miles worth of fartleks the next night, three miles the next and then 12.5 at my fastest pace on a long run ever two days after that. Rinse, lather, repeat since then and the shoes have been nothing but perfect.

Another vote for replace them now, while there should be no need to break them I prefer to get a few miles on a new pair of shoes before race day.

I agree, running in the old ones could be problematic in the long term - new ones shouldn't need any breaking in, but would you be able to get them a little before your runs so that you can get used to the feel of them?

Thanks to all of you! I'm definitely going to get some new ones. I'm now looking into the best places to get properly fitted. Thanks again!

I didn't read all the responses, but if your shoes are YEARS old, definitely get new ones. Shoes need to be replaced every 300-500 or so miles, depending on how you run. With a half marathon and a full marathon training you definitely need new ones! Good luck to you, by the way. :drinker:

I drove 6 hours to partake in a marathon and realized half way there I had forgotten my shoes. I got new ones that day, ran the race the next and everything was hunky dory. I say get new shoes now.
