Sodium and Water. Its confusing me.

Recently I have read in threads "Drink lots of water to balance out that sodium." I am pretty constantly going over my sodium but also drink copious amounts of water.
Does sodium and water actually have any correlation? Is it okay that I can hardly ever keep my sodium below the recommended values?
I worry about it on occasion but have no known health issues so I normally shrug it off and forget about it.
Thoughts? Clarification?

high sodium will cause you to gain water weight, drinking more water will "flush" the extra water out.0
