Do you count?

Just wondering who counts doing extra chores such as cleaning out closets, washing windows, gardening, etc. exercise?

Replies

  • I sometimes count housework or chores if I am doing it nonstop for an hour and I can keep moving, up and down the stairs with laundry, vacuuming, organizing closets. I time myself and make sure I don't stop. It's a good workout and I also get a lot done if I say I am going to keep going for an hour. I also counted when I shoveled the snow out of our driveway...that was a workout.

Not really, no. Well, chopping wood, yes. Dusting, no.

I count it. I've seen people have hissy fits, saying "I'll defriend anyone counts cleaning as exercise." Whatever. To each his own.

Personally, I log hissy fits as exercise too!

I wouldn't count those unless you live a very sedentary lifestyle.

I don't count it unless my heart rate gets very high or I get very sweaty or am moving around really fast.

I count lawn mowing. Our lawn areas are large and steep so I do work up a sweat pushing the mower uphill.

I log gardening occasionally if I am doing heavy stuff like digging or cutting hedges as it is outside my normal activities, causes me to sweat and hurts the next day. :flowerforyou:

I don't. I figure those kinds of things are just a part of life. I'd be doing them anyway, whether I was trying to be more fit or not.

    Agreed. I never count housework/cleaning.
  • I count getting out of bed in the morning as a sit-up.

Everyday cleaning, no. I'm a SAHM of 3 children (one in school), so there is always something to clean in my house- I have my activity level set to light active. Now if I'm doing my big Spring cleaning or shoveling snow- I'll count that with a HRM.

How many calories could I count on from throwing hissy fits? ; )

If it isn't either 1) actually intended to be done as exercise or 2) extremely unusual in duration or effort, then no.

So, cleaning the house, weeding the garden - no. Digging up flowerbeds for 3 hours, or walking through Carlsbad Caverns - yes.

Extra chores, yes. Everyday chores, only if I'm feeling ROTTEN and need the extra incentive to push myself.

Not everyday chores like the dishes or laundry. I do count more extensive projects that involve moving furniture or when I clean out and rearrange my closet. If I work up a sweat I count it, but I usually cut the time in half, better safe than sorry.
