A lot of people do a "spike day" once a week where they eat whatever they want and don't worry about calories (they say it "kick starts" their metabolism, but I don't believe that one day of eating whatever will have any effect on metabolism--same reason I don't believe one day of barely eating sends one into starvation mode).

I don't follow the spike day mentality, but I do go about 300 calories over my goal about twice a week (not usually on purpose). A day (or two) of binging won't derail your weight loss as long as it doesn't happen often, and you get back on track the next day.
  • I recently went on vacation, got sick while I was there, then came home and am still getting over this darn cold! Anyway, while on vacation I won't say I went totally nuts, but I definitely ate what I wanted, ate more frequently than I do at home, didn't really get to work out because of being sick, and have still (until yesterday) not been logging or paying too much attention to calories. All said and done, I actually lost 5 lbs over that time! So...for me, the period of "splurging" was no damage what so ever =-). Don't be afraid to eat whatever you want...remember, it take a full 3500 calories to gain one pound =-).

I did it for 10 days and I lost 1.5 pounds. It helped my break my plateau oddly enough.

Yes I did. I took the Holidays off.
I weighed to little I thought at 111 so I "took off" from Oct to Jan.
I gained 10lbs mostly of fat on my stomach. I started tracking and working out again Jan 1st and cant get anywhere.
I feel stronger and healthier, but I cant get rid of the stomach I got from eating all the cookies I wanted for 3 months.

    Thanksgiving of 2010 - gained 5 or 7#.
The food had a lot of salt - I drank a lot of water and it was fine and back to pre-Thanksgiving weight after a week.
^ This is kind of funny b/c I'm short and 7# is around 5-6% of my total body weight.

In general I take breaks from logging, but I almost always keep up the exercise...

I'm taking "time out" right now... I don't know that I'm splurging a lot though, so maybe I don't count. I'm just not counting calories for a little bit and eating around maintenance (or so I assume since my weight isn't really going up or down).

My "time out" was inspired by frustration at a not-moving scale. I don't really know what the long term effects will be... but I think 'diet breaks' are a good mental-health strategy. You really can't lose weight unless your mind is in the game... my mind isn't right now... so... chillin' until I can get my mojo back.

Usually every weekend I'll go over my calories one day by 500-1000. My deficit is set at -500 already so at the most I really only get an extra 500 calories in there. Hasn't halted my progress, and often that combined with a day of rest will give me awesome energy for my monday morning run.

I cannot stress enough fitting treats you want in your daily routine. For example I love ice cream and the fact that I can eat however much of it I want daily (aslong as it fits in my calories) stops me from taking 'time out' to eat a giant amount of it.

I take anywhere from 4-10 days off here and there, and there is no damage to speak of.
