run or speed walk?

So, I'm going to do the race for life and my gym want to set up teams - some running, some walking and some doing a bit of both - the walkers are doing the 10K and runners are doing the 5K. I'd want to either walk, or run it but I can't decide. One of the women that work at the gym has offered to train me to run the 5K (I'm not a good runner at all) and as its not until 1st July I'm quite tempted.
What would you do.. Try and run 5K or power walk 10K?

You seem to be in the position that I was a couple of weeks ago. I wanted to set a goal so that I would be more motivated to get fit and decided to sign up as a jogger for a 10k mini marathon in the 1st week of June. I am not a runner at all, have never ever run in my life (except probably long long ago in my school days). The only exercise that I used to do was walks and zumba. I started training by power walking and using tips from c25k and now just over 10 days of training (well, with some break days), I jogged my first km two days back without much effort. I also have a mini goal of a 5k run at the end of April and hoping that I will be fit enough to do it.
So its upto you whether you would prefer the 5k run or 10k power walk. If I were you, I would give the 5k run a try and I think that if I can do it, you definitely can0 -
it takes 9 weeks to train to run a 5k with c25k, you have enough time, go for it!!0

Alrighty then I'm gonna go for it =D0

Try for the 5k run.
If during the actual race itself you found it was too much, stopping running and walking is not a crime, many of the women in that race do that all the time, but if you found you could continue and run right to the finish......... you'll get addicted and want to do another and another...... seriously it gets addictive bigtime!
However, if you did the 10k powerwalk, you will never know if you were capable of doing the run because in the 10k one you cannot just suddenly break out into a run (as far as I am aware).
Always aim for over and above what you want to achieve, that way, if you fall a little short you will still reach your goal.
Besides which, I think you are well ready to do that run or you wouldn't even be considering it xxx0 -

The first time out it is, "good grief!!!", the second time out it is "that was easier!", the third time out it is "I actually enjoyed that!", the fourth time out is "next training session is *insert date here*" (and you start to look forward to it), by the fifth you are like "wow, I wouldn't have been able to do that the first session!!!" - then you are on your way.
In the grand scheme of things, starting jogging/running, is like the blink of an eye, before you know it, you will be running further than you ever thought you were capable of. The real fact is, you were always capable of it, you just didn't know it
Go for it, you can lose nothing, but you could gain everything x0 -

I'm actually quite excited.. I did about a mile run the other day, stopped and started a little but overall I was pleased with what I did.
I might be doing another jog tonight but I've also got a gig to go to so I may not feel like it when I get home (maybe about midnight). Late night jogs are fun but I don't know about tonight.. I hope I can though!0
