Shoes in Gym

I'm newer to working out in a gym and am wondering what type of tennis shoes are best to wear when working out? I don't do any running, basically just walking on treadmill, elliptical, bike and then strength training. Is a mesh type shoe better than an all leather, and should I go with a cross training shoe or something else?

    Cross trainers.

    If you do any real weight lifting, having shoes with little compression and no heel drop is ideal. You do not want to do squats and deadlifts in a tennis shoe.

    I use new balance minimus cross trainers. LOVE them.
