This version is so much healthier than the store bought granolas!! And you can play around with it, adding whatever ingredients suit your taste.
Take 3 cups of rolled oats and 1/3 cup oat bran (you can use ground flaxseed if you like or leave it out entirely) and spread out on a cookie sheet. Toast under the broiler for a few minutes. Keep a close eye on it so it doesn't burn. Takes maybe 5-8 minutes. You want them to be light brown in color.
In a large skillet on your stove, mix the following together on medium heat....
1.5 tbsp unsweetened applesauce
1.5 tbsp canola oil (you can leave this out and just increase the applesauce, if you want to lower the calories and fat)
1.5 tbsp raw honey
2 tbsp brown sugar
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1/8 tsp salt
Cook until it bubbles and sugar is melted, about 1 minute.
Then add your toasted oats and oat bran to the mixture. Stir.
Add 1/2 cup sliced almonds, 1/4 cup walnuts and 3 tbsp sunflower seeds.
Stir for 1 minute or until all the oats have been covered.
Spread mixture on a cookie sheet sprayed with cooking oil. Return to warm oven (broiler off) for 30 minutes or so until the granola is dried out and crunchy.
My oven tends to cool off quickly so sometimes I have to put it on a very low temp to get the granola to dry out. You don't want to cook it, you simply want to dry it out a little bit.

I make my own granola also, there are so many wonderful receipes out there and you can really be creative. Homemade is so much healthier than the 'store bought' because YOU control what is in it. 3 cheers for homemade granola (I just made some this morning).:drinker:0

Oh I should also add that there's ONLY 4 grams of sugar per 1/2 cup serving. SOOOOO much less than what you see in store-bought granola!
You can also add dried fruit to it or whatever you want. It's really very adjustable!0 -
