All I'm hearing is we need to be doing strength training and lifting weights to lose fat and to tone. Any suggestions to do this without having access to a gym?

Free weights. You can use milk jugs filled with water if you can't afford some free weights. Push ups. Pull ups.

Also, consider exercises like Pilates and yoga for muscle. Squats & lunges.

I've been lifting weights on and off for a couple months now and I am already seeing more definition/tone. I'll never go back to cardio alone.

    Good luck!

Plenty of programs out there to choose from. I switched to stronglifts 5X5 a month ago after years of doing the split body routine with very slow progress.

Learn the compound lifts (Bench Press, Squats, Barbell Row, Deadlift, etc).

Start at a realistic weight and don't worry about what other people are lifting.

    Use free weights.

I'm an advocate of strength training to supplement my diet. Tony Venuto says that weight loss is due to diet 80% and exercise 20%. Strength training should tone you up and the muscle mass will bump up your metabolism from where you are. I prefer strength training over cardio but I am not trying to get ripped. I applaud the guys who do but I'd prefer to use that time to do woordwor=king, r/c airplanes and building a patio. It's just where you want to put your time I think.

Body weight exercises are a great start.

Squats, lunges, push ups, pull ups, bench dips, etc.
