Questions about cardio!

I usually work out 30 minutes a day, as hard as I can. By the time I'm finished with those 30 minutes, I am utterly exhausted and my body feels like a noodle and I just want to pass out!
I do this because I have a lot to do in a day and I want to make sure I have enough time for everything.
However, I'm not really seeing a lot of progress, and I was wondering if it would be better to work out mildly for 60 minutes, still sweating but not pushing myself as hard, or to just continue with what I'm doing now.
It seems like the type of question someone who's well educated in fitness would know, and I know so little about that kind of stuff! I just want to make sure I'm doing the right kind of thing during the time I spend inside of my gym.
