Bad wheel

Well okay, not a wheel, but a knee. My knee is making some horrid noises and hurts every now and then. (I'll be contacting the doctor about it again) I mainly walk for all of my exercise. I can't do lunges with that leg or squats...stairs are even difficult. So what else can I do that can avoid that right knee?

Hi Cherry
may i ask how have you hurt your knee ?
i also have problems with my knees, most of my joints are a bit creaky in fact !! I have seen the specialist and he told me that exercise can have positive effect as it builds the muscle up around the joint which in turn protects it and can help to ease pain. As long as you start slow and listen to what your body is saying "basically if it starts to hurt - then stop"
Used to struggle with exercise however i have built it up over the years and my usual activities these days are cv in the gym, aerobics/boxercise, swimming, badminton and walking. i have started to do the 200 squat challenge however i am having a few problems with this and may need to opt out. :frown:

I'd swim, do light weight training to build up the muscles around my knee/overall.
No matter what, though, knee injuries suck.0 -
If you're like me - you don't even know WHY it hurts... I have a hip like that - some days it's fine, but other days it's almost debilitating.
Swimming or water aerobics might be a good option. How about a recumbent bike? Pilates? Anything low impact should be ok.
Definitely see your doctor though and if you haven't already... visit a runners store and have them analyze your gait, both in shoes and out of shoes. You might find that you're walking unevenly and that new shoes could help.0 -
I thought about swimming. My knee just started making a grinding noise. You can feel it when you place your hand on it too. I can actually hear it when I walk up the stairs and it drives me insane. When I'm out walking it gets a tad sore. I said something to the doctor when it first started making noise and she asked if it hurt. It didn't then, so I'm going to have to call her. I'm going to look into what time the pool does either classes or lap time. Thanks eveyone!0

Do you take glucosamine and chondroitin? I've found that it really helps with joint pain. It could be cartilage in your knee that's inflamed.0

Make sure your excercise shoes are doing what they are supposed to! You might need a different pair, or some inserts. If you go to a running store (like Playmakers) they can help you get a great pair0

Yes, see a doctor. Get her approval for exercise. Ask her about yoga and exercises to strengthen the knee. A flexible knee is less likely injured. You may want to consider myofacial release treatment, if you truly have pain from past injuries.
Yoga has several exercises to strengthen your knee and gain flexibility. Go to a class, tell the instructor you have knee issues. Listen to the pointers on where to place the knee. Alignment is important and remember to place the knee over the ankle for proper support and alignment. Listen to your body and do not go past the edge. If you do something painful, stop and reevaluat what you did to make it hurt.0 -
Swimming is not good for the knee. Kicking into the water can injure the joint.0
