Zombies, Run! (running app)

I tried it for the first time this morning. I didn't manage to get the GPS tracking to work for some reason, but I've emailed their support to see if I can suss out why...
No route planned for you. You don't need to veer off course to collect items, you collect them regardless of whether you're walking or running I think. There is no need to look at your phone at all once you've started the mission.
So breakdown:
Open app, slide bar "to run", select mission, select playlist and hit "Start Mission". Everything else from that point on is audio. First mission lasts about 30mins.
You get story interspersed between your playlist tracks, and when you "pick up items" you hear a computer voice similar to a video game over your track.
*Spoiler*: In the first mission there are 6 story segments, and you pick up a heap of stuff.
I didn't evade any Zombie mobs, as none where encountered, although they sounded close on my tail! I understand that if GPS is working then it'll work out the pace you're running and you can potentially be caught if you don't run fast enough.
I'm not the world's best runner, but it did a great job of making me dig a little bit deeper this morning. Hope this helps. I've tried not to spoil anything, and I've yet to decide how to invest the items I picked up, as there is a Sims-like other half to the game as well!
£5.50 well spent I'd say.
P.S. Running early morning through empty streets certainly adds to the experience!0 -
Can anyone give a proper breakdown of how exactly it works?
I've read the description on itunes and it gives a bit of a vague description but I want to know - does it decide a route for you? Do you have to veer off course to 'collect items'? Do you need to look at your phone to see the map all the time? Does the map show where the zombies are? etc etc?
Anyone with a proper breakdown of how it works?

I haven written about the app in my blog here: http://rookin.wordpress.com/
and the app website should give you details: https://www.zombiesrungame.com/
...but I shall tell you how it works.
Basically it's just a story you listen (like an audiobook) which plays music from your play list. You dont need to look at the phone or refer to it while you are running as the instructions are audio.
The home screen looks like this...
Below is what you will see while running. As you can see it's like a timeline of events.
Below I have made up an example of what a mission could be like. Basically like I said it's a story you listen to. You will be given instructions by someone at the base who is operating the radio tower of what you will need to do...
12:05pm - "Runner 5 we need to to go out and collect medical supplies from the hosptial which is located about half a mile to the north from here. We are opening the gates now. Go Go Go."
*playlist music*
12:07pm - You have collected 9mm bullets
*playlist music*
12:08pm - "Runner 5, we can see you on the montior. It's bad news. There appears to be a hoard of Zombies coming from the east.... Wait... There is a little girl out there! She's ALIVE! That's who the zombies are chasing. The hospital can wait. Head east. RUN!"
*playlist music*
12:10pm - Collected Batteries, and a can of tin food.
*playlist music*
12:11pm "Attention to all Runners. There is a little girl, she must only be about 9 years old out in the wilderness, east of Abel Township. Runner 5 is heading to her now. It seems very odd for a girl her age to be out there alone. There maybe more survivors out there. Runner 3 you passed a farmhouse a while back. Maybe the girl came from there. Runner 5 you need to speed up. Runner 3 head back to the farmhouse.
*playlist music*
12:13pm Collected a Mobile Phone.
*playlist music*
12:15pm - "Oh my god! Runner 3!!! *radio crackles* Runner 5, that farmhouse... It's infested with zombies. We have lost Runner 3. Runner 5 you are getting nearer to the girl. You have to speed up! Run! Run!"
*playlist music*
12:17pm - "Runner 5! Can you still hear me? I'm so sorry... I am so sorry... That girl... She... She... She... didn't make it, and now I have lead you straight into the path of the zombies. I am sorry this is all my fault. I should have told you to stick to the mission. I have lost Runner 3 and I am not losing you! If you can, turn back! I can see six zombies heading your way. Run! Run as fast as you can!!"
*playlist music*
12:19pm - Collected a book, a USB key.
*playlist music*
12:21pm - "Runner 5!!! What are you doing? Don't slow down! The Zombies are gaining on you! The Hospital isn't far away. RUN!
*playlist music*
12:25pm - "Runner 5, You are now at the hospital. Collect as many medical supplies you can. Also... I know this isn't part of your mission but I worked in that hospital, before... Well... You know, before the outbreak... I have a feeling I know why this all started. There should be a medical file labled "Y25" if you can find that there is a chance that we can find a cure"
*playlist music*
12:26pm - Collected Bandages.
*playlist music*
12:27pm - Collected Pain Meds
*playlist music*
12:29pm - "Runner 5, I don't want to worry you but the zombies you avoided earlier seem to be massing around your location. I don't want to put your life at risk but that file is very important."
*playlist music*
12:33pm - Collected Bandages.
*playlist music*
12:34pm - "My god... it can't be... It is! Runner 5... One of the zombies... One of them is Runner 3. No! No... and her.. The little girl. You are going to have to look faster"
*playlist music*
12:35pm - "Collected a File labled "Y25", and some tinned food"
*playlist music*
12:36pm - "Runner 5 you have the file. Head back to base!"
12:36pm - Mission Completed. Switching to radio mode.
*playlist music*
12:38pm - "Hello, everyone out there. I'm Jack and i'm going to play you a few of my favourite tracks. Like this one..."
*playlist music*
12:40pm - "Wow, that was an oldie! I once saw them live.. back in the day.. Before their tour bus got attacked by zombies. You won't see them live now... Get in... Er... anyway.. On to another song"
*playlist music*
12:42pm - Collected an Axe.
*playlist music*
...... etc, until you want stop running. Then you just hit the stop running button and then you can assign what you have collected to the parts of the base that need it.
And that's the game in a nutshell0 -
You've been using this a wee while... Are you able to help me with my GPS problem a few posts above? I can't seem to get it to work, so no distance logged or zombie hordes to evade...
My settings are Tracking: Acquiring GPS fix / Zombie Chases: On. - Is that what yours says? Help!0 -

Brilliant - much better understanding and it does sound pretty cool!
When it's telling you head east, I assume it's taking you down specific roads that it has decided on? Then when it says things like turn bak you have to turn and sprint the other way away from the zombie hordes?
Also in that example, when you were in the hospital, are you stationary or do you just continue running?0 -

I don't think it actually knows where you are. Just your pace and I assume the direction you are heading. You are constantly moving, so when the story says you are in a building, or "look there is a barn up ahead" you just have to use your imagination. When you are being chased by zombies the app will let you know... Actually let me cut and paste the instructions...
Before Running
To begin a mission, either use the ‘slide to run’ bar on the main screen or tap the Mission button in the navbar to choose a specific mission.
Music
On the Mission screen, you can choose whether to listen to music and which playlist you'd like, along with whether you would like your playlist shuffled.
The game will interleave the story with your own music, so you’ll hear a story section, then a track, then another story section, and so on. Very long tracks might be split up.
Tracking
There are two ways to track your activity: GPS and accelerometer.
GPS: This records your speed and distance (but not currently your location). We also use this to determine how fast you need to speed up during zombie chases. We recommend that you wait until a GPS fix is acquired before running. GPS is only available on iPhones.
Accelerometer: This is anexperimental feature that uses the in-built accelerometer in iPhones and iPod Touches to record paces. Zombie chases will not occur in the accelerometer mode. Please note that your device must remainunlocked while running; visit your phone Settings > General > Auto-Lock.
You cannot use the GPS and Accelerometer at the same time.
During Running
Zombies, Run! is a very easy game to play. You don’t need to press any buttons or look at the screen at any time while running - the game unfolds automatically so you can concentrate on the story and on running.
Each mission is composed of around five story sections and should take about 25-30 minutes to complete, depending on the length of your music tracks. Once a mission is over, you’ll begin hearing clips from Abel Radio.
While running, you’ll automatically collect supplies. When you’re back home, you can assign these supplies to buildings in Abel Township.
Zombie Mob Chases
While you’re running, you may hear, “Warning: Zombies Detected.†If this happens, you are being chased by a zombie mob and must speed up for up to 1 minute in order to escape.
You can tell how close the zombies are by the beeping and by the computer voice. As the zombies get closer, the beeping will get faster. If they catch you, you’ll automatically drop supplies to distract them.
You can disable zombie chases in the game Settings.
ONLY speed up if you are in an open area free of obstacles. You must take care while running.
Finishing a run
To finish a run, simply tap ‘Stop Mission’.
Run Logs
You can view records of all previous runs by going to the Missions tab and tapping the 'Run Logs' button in the top right. Tapping on individual runs will show a full log of the events from that run.
Managing Abel Township
The supplies you collect during runs can be assigned to different buildings in Abel Township by dragging and dropping them over the relevant building.
You can identify buildings and check their health and level by tapping on them. Increasing a building's level may unlock extra missions.
Other Settings
Game volume: Controls the volume of in-game audio including story sections, item pickup notifications, and zombie chase noises relative to your music volume.
Item pickup speech: Allows you to turn off item pickup speech notifications during runs.
Item pickup vibration: Makes your device vibrate when you collect an item.
Zombie chases: Global setting to active or deactivate zombie chases in missions. This currently only works when using GPS tracking.0 -

Sorry. I don't work the the developers so I am not sure what the fault could be. Mine says Acquiring fix and then says GPS Acquired. I have Zombie Chases on. Once GPS is aquired that's when I start running0 -
Thanks for letting me know what your app says. Thats helpful.
Support have replied, so I'm slowly narrowing it down.
Thus far, I have discovered that the Location permission was not granted by default for that app, so I've switched that on. Still stuck on "Acquiring GPS fix" though...0 -

Do you definitely get a GPS fix in other applications like maps?0 -
Absolutely. I checked when I was out running with it by opening up Maps, and figuring out the distance I'd run that way. Despite turning on GPS for that individual app, it still says "acquiring GPS fix".
Here is what support suggested, and what I sent back...
"- Is GPS turned on in your phone's settings screen? I can't find this setting, but other apps like Maps are working fine, so I presume it is.
- Does Zombies, Run! have permission to use location services in your phone's settings screen? It didn't, but it does now. This seems like the reason it wasn't working before but it is still "acquiring GPS fix". what should it say? I've rebooted the phone but no joy.
- Do you have GPS signal in your area? Maps works, so I presume so!
Also, within location permission, a grey arrow is now next to Zombies, Run! and the mission distance has now turned from --.-- to 00.00."
I am open to any and all suggestions.0 -

Awesome. I'm doing this.0

That's what I figured, but I haven't had the opportunity to test yet. My employers are cruel people and chain me to the desk. I'll see what it does on the way home from work...0

Awesome. Thank you so much for the helpful replies. Something I am wondering though, if it is available on iTunes, can you get it onto an iPod Nano or does it have to be on something 'smart' like a phone? The reason I ask is that even though I could just wait until it's released on Android in May/June (according to The Guardian UK website) I don't actually have any music on my phone!!!0
-
This looks fun! I'll have to try it.0
-
This does sound really awesome. My iPod touch is 2nd gen, so it won't work. I briefly debated upgrading the iPod, but I still won't get the zombie chase without GPS. I guess I'll wait until it comes out on Android and try then.0
-
Can't wait until it comes to Android!
You don't have to wait!
Did they already release it???0 -
Is this app fun on a treadmill, or do you actually have to change direction and such which would make treadmill use moot?0

You could, but it wouldn't use GPS. I had one mission where my GPS didn't work, for some reason (probably similar to the issue another poster had, upthread). It merely instructed me to run faster for entire songs and zombies never closed-in on me, since the app had no way of knowing how fast/slow I was moving.0 -
sounds fun! this can help me get ready for my 10k in a few weeks0

Annnnnnnd it works! As soon as i started moving around with it, the GPS sorted itself out, and the distance started clocking up. Can't wait to try this out again now with zombie hordes!0 -

Don't be so rude. It isn't out on Android yet, the one on Android is a different app. The makers of this app stated on the Guardian website a couple of days ago that it is out in May/June.0 -
To answer those people who were having issues with not getting 'Zombie Chases', I emailed the developers and this is what they say...
_________________________________________________________________________
Hi Russell,
Thanks for your email! In order to get zombie chases, you need to fulfil the following criteria:
- You must be running Zombies, Run! version 1.1
- GPS must be on & have a fix
- You must have Zombie Chases turned on
- You must be consistently moving faster than 3.5km/h
- You must be consistently moving slower than 15km/h
If you're still having problems once you're sure you fulfil all these criteria, please let me know.
All the best,
Matt.0 -

It's not being rude. Had she read through the entire thread she would not have needed to ask, as this exact issue was clarified quite a ways up-thread.0 -
LOVE ZOMBIES!!! I am from the zombie capital of the world. So I must download.0
-
I'M SO EXCITED TO TRY THIS.
I will try this out during my run tomorrow!
Never thought I'd be so excited to be chased by zombies!
This is great b/c I don't have to smell awful offal. :laugh:0 -
Totally not worth $8.00... They really need to lower the price of this app.0
-
Definitely want to download this when it comes to Android!0
