I always get so excited when a girl ventures into the weight section at my gym since I'm always the only girl in there...but then they start doing rows and curls with 5 pounds.... Disappointing.

bump for the squats, deads and power cleans I did Wed.

AND for the woman I saw doing deads in the gym. She looked fantastic. Probably aro 40 yo but looked better than girls 1/2 her age.

To be honest, I have ventured over to the free-weights and I feel lost. I don't know what to do and I don't want to do lifts incorrectly so I end up doing the weight machines and cardio.

I felt the same way when I first started. Just look up video tutorials on different exercises. After a couple times in the free weights section, you'll start to feel comfortable and you won't want to go back! I rarely use machines now except for certain exercises like leg curls, extentions, etc. You just have to jump in there! :) And you could always ask someone who works at the gym to check your form or for tips.

As a women, just ask for advice as aproc said. Trust me, no dude is going to refuse to help a lady unless he's a total *kitten*

This was NOT accomplished by some frilly magazine article.
Was it accomplished by some manly book? Sorry, not trying to be a smarta$$, but go easy on the folks who are just venturing out into the world of weights. We've all been force fed the 'barbie' weights at high reps lie for years, it takes time to get past it. And if someone starts out with a magazine article that gets them doing moves with 3 - 8lb weights - more power to 'em, it's a step! They may see some results and start to dig deeper and want to go farther with heavier stuff. Everybody's got to start somewhere.

I have read NROL4W - it's a great book and I would love to start the program (had the book from the library, renewed it three times, finally had to return it!), but I don't have the book or access to a gym and big weights at the moment, so I do the best I can at home with my dumbbells - none of which are pink, by the way! LOL But the heaviest I have are 12lbs, and I had to save up and wait for those to go on sale before I could buy them.

I love the results I see people getting with heavy lifting (you guys rock!) and I want to get there myself, but I don't want the attitude that seems to come with it all too often. Lifting heavy is great, but doesn't mean all other workouts are rubbish. Some encouragement without snark goes a long way!

You see that thread though? A few of us tried to reason but you get "thanks!", "great article", "will read later!" right after someone explains why that article really is a waste of time.

One wonders how to actually reach people and turn them to a better use of their time and energy.

You've got great muscular arms, well done.

BUT some women AND men prefer the toned slim dancers' arms look rather than the muscular look so each to their own, I think.

Are you referencing the magazine that's touting questionable bro-science information on unsuspecting women?

I think using compound movements burn more calories, work WAY more muscle groups and will achieve better results than the very isolated, small msucle group exercises touted by that magazine.

If you disagree, then what are your standards that you are referencing your judgement?

Some people like to lift weights...I've seen you on multiple threads bashing weight training. What difference does it make to you what the rest of us want to do with our own bodies? I personally don't care, because I'm gonna succeed doing what I'm doing...no doubt about it.
