I have to make an unexpected trip this evening so I will be on the road for 5 hours and am looking for suggestions on fast food or "quick" meals. I am at work and will not be going home first, so preparing something ahead is not an option. Does anyone have any suggestions for a meal that is healthy and under 600 calories? Please not Wendy's chili and baked potato...I have worn that out! I will pass just about every chain place somewhere along the way. Oh, very important fact I forgot to mention...I follow a gluten-free diet for other health reasons. Thanks for the help!

    Bumping for responses.

Even if your suggestion is not GF, please throw it out there. I have learned to creatively adapt.
  • When we are stuck in the car, traveling, I often go to Taco Bell and get the Pintos & Cheese, Fresca Style. Then I get the cheap nachos (just chips and cheese). I mix the cheese with the pintos and dip the chips. Unless they've changed, their fire sauce packets have gluten, so that would not be a good addition.

    Um... Really?

porter229, is there any chance you could bring something with you? Also pretty much anywhere you stop they are bound to have some kind of salad...

It's really just as fast to swing into a grocery on the way as a fast food joint. Pick up some jerky, mixed nuts, fruit (dried is easier to eat in a car than fresh). Sometimes gas stations have these things also.

I used to drive home from school (6 hours one way) every other weekend. I would stop for gas and that's it, so food in the car was normal.

I never think or Taco Bell bc I can't eat their meat. Pintos and cheese may be an option. Thanks.

Can you stop at a grocery store & pick up a few things? I have Celiac's & ALWAYS travel with my own food. Something easy to eat like some Popcorners popcorn chips with some carrot & celery stix to munch on: easy to eat while driving. If you HAVE to stop, seriously, stopping at some place like Outback & getting salmon w/plain steamed veggies (you can get a to go order) will be better than any fast food places, and cals are DEF less than 600 (just tell them to grill plain, no added seasonings or salts & no butter on the veggies-plain steamed in water).

I had to do a last minute 3-day business trip & packed my breakfasts & lunches & snacks & everyone was jealous of my food while they were eating bagels & sandwiches - lol! It's not a choice, but I'm glad I'm stuck this way since I don't have the temptation to stop for junk.

I am leaving from work...unplanned family emergency and my home is 30 miles in the opposite direction. I do have a Lara bar and some nuts in my desk drawer, but I am thinking meal. I may stop in a grocery store for a salad or sushi.

I know what you mean...I am so used to planning ahead, being caught off guard like this has thrown me into a tizzy. The Outback option sounds good. Maybe I will call ahead before I leave work and have it ready when I get there. Nice idea.
