best for what?0

Yes. It is the best. It beats all the other foods. All the other foods are jealous.0
-
I like the texture of it a lot better. It's chewier, and more satisfying for me.0
-
i have heard it tastes nastier..but what do you mean best ? best for taste, health, to give you superpowers ?0
-
lol, I meant for health.0

They have more fiber, which is better for your health but they take longer to cook. I like them. :flowerforyou:0

Supposedly, the body burns it at a slower rate than rolled oats, making it a more complex, complex carbohydrate. I certainly think it tastes better (I toast the oats before cooking) and make it in large enough quantities that I can grab a container in the morning, toss it in the microwave for 80 seconds, and eat it on my way to work. I have it probably 5-6 days a week.0

I haven't cooked any in awhile, but I need to get some again. I usually buy Bob's Red Mill. Steel cut oats have protein and iron, something that gets processed out of instant.
There are recipes for overnight oatmeal in a crock pot. I usually make a batch on the stove and eat it throughout the week. Unflavored they remind me of really stout grits.0 -

not true for all instant oats0 -
It is definitely more filling so you're not hungry an hour later... I usually buy it from the bulk bin at my local store so I don't know the brand...
I'll even give a recipe:
Single serve container of plain greek non-fat yogurt (or other plain yogurt of your choice)
1 mashed banana
whatever other fruit you want to add (I personally like frozen cherries best! but apples, peaches, berries or whatever you like are also good - fresh or frozen)
1 TBSP sugar free torani syrup (or other sweetener/flavoring of your choice)
1/4 cup raw steel cut oats
Mix together and keep in fridge overnight (so the oats get soft). Eat.
This is super filling so you might want to divide it into 2 servings - especially if you add a lot of fruit.0 -
They taste way better than normal oatmeal! You can do them in the crockpot over night. 1 cup oats, 4 cups of water, on low for 7-8 hours.0

Sooooo much better than instant oatmeal ! So much that I've eaten them plain or just with a light sweetner when I've hoarded calories for later meals. I've favored Bob's Red Mill.0

Mix some peanut butter in with your oatmeal! Its great!0
-
it takes a long time to cook...you should presoak it
tried the bob redmill one and made it with milk and it was ok once you add some cinammon, raisins, and walnuts to it
i tried to make it with water...and ew..is all i can say.0 -

Bump Bump. That sounds good. My mom eats this kind. I never knew any groovy ways to make it.0 -
Ok who spilled the beans about oatmeal giving us superpowers? That was supposed to be a secret guys....0
-
Absolutely ....cook a cup of dry steel oats at a time...keep in fridge and microwave when in the mood. Tastes as good as a dessert to me.0
-
Wow that recipe wit the yogurt sounds good.0
-
Yes they are the best. I like all brands. Eating steel cut oats will give you superpowers. Just be respectful of this and don't use your new found powers for evil. That would be wrong.0
-
they take 8 years to cook though.
i made the mistake of trying to make steel cut oatmeal once in a microwave at my old job one morning. when i said i was going to make oatmeal people were thinking i'd be back in 2 minutes max.. nope it was more like 10-15 cus i have to keep adding milk and mixing it and making sure it was fully cooked.
it was good though, but what i did for the future was just cook a batch of it at home and then take some of it with me to work so all i'd have to do is heat it0 -
I had instant oatmeal today, and nearly ralphed  I forgot how gross all other oatmeal is compared to steel-cut oats.
I cook 1 cup of oats, 3 cups liquid in my steel cooker overnight with various spices/fruit and it's enough to last for 5 breakfasts...and it's like having dessert for breakfast, yummm0 -
I'm liking the idea of cooking up a batch for the week - the time thay take to cook is what has put me off before.
My question is as I am also someone who can't eat oatmeal made with water  if I make a batch with milk is it going to keep for 5 days in the fridge?.... or can they be soaked overnight then just heated or would they still need some cooking time?
Thanks : )0 -

I haven't actually laughed out loud at something on here for ages
Hahha love that response
(I'm stil giggling)0 -
It has a chewier texture and is more filling. I'm not as hungry as fast when I eat it. I use 1/4 c oats, 3/4 c water and bring to a boil. Let it simmer for 30 min stirring occasionally. That's when I stalk the internet. I use to add a tbsp of maple syrup but realized it was just a waste of calories and sugar so I stopped and didn't notice. I add a tbsp of ground flax seed and a tbsp of chia seeds with 1/4 c of skim milk. I prefer steel cut oats over anything else. I get it at the bulk food store. They have an organic section at mine.0

Steel cut oats take longer to cook because they haven't been processed as much. They are great when done in a crockpot/slow cooker. Here's a recipe. I'm sure you can adjust the amount to make more to last through the week.
Almond blast oatmeal
Nutrition Data (Makes approximately 2 cups)

Ingredients
1/2 cup steel cut oats
1 cup light coconut milk, unsweetened
1 cup almond milk, unsweetened
2 tsp. dry coconut flakes, unsweetened, low fat
1 tbsp. cocoa powder, unsweetened
1/4 cup almonds (optional)
Directions
In your slow cooker, combine the oats, coconut milk, almond milk, coconut flakes and cocoa powder and whisk until the cocoa powder is well incorporated into the milk.
Cook on low for 4-5 hours, or until liquid is completely soaked up by the oats.
When finished, stir in the almonds (optional), allow to cool and serve.0 -
So many responses to this are so funny! You guys crack me up.
So oats are pretty highly processed, including smashing, cooking or partially cooking, rolling and cutting. And each step in those multiple processes tends to leach a bit of the nutrients and break down a bit of the fiber. So more processed means a bit less nutritious. Steel cut oats are one of the least processed types, just cut instead of smashed, cooked, rolled, etc. So you could assume they have more nutrients and higher fiber.
I like them - even if they do take 8 years to cook!
:laugh:0 -
That Almond Blast Oatmeal sounds AWESOME! But my crock pot is a 5-6 qt, so for me to do enough I'd be eating Oatmeal every meal for the next year!0
