FYI Some of you may find this segment on 60 minutes tomorrow interesting:

"Dr. Robert Lustig, a pediatric endocrinologist believes that the high amount of sugar in the American diet is killing us. And new scientific research seems to support his theory that sugar is toxic, including some linking the excess ingestion of sugars to heart disease. He is going to be featured in CBS 60 minutes so I encourage everyone to watch it on Sunday April 1, 7 p.m. ET/PT. "You can read more about it here http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-18560_162-57407128/is-sugar-toxic/?tag=pop;stories

Color me skeptic. I find it interesting that "sugar is bad" gets press (it does fit current agenda), when the cardiovascular surgeon who is proving that inflammation not cholesterol causes heart disease does not. (This theory has been in medical literature for about 5 years now - no 60 minutes on it.)

Everything in moderation. Even dreaded sugar (which is just another carbohydrate).

I wonder what they consider 'excessive'? Too much of anything can be bad for your health.

    I bring a message from Acg67:

This is the study that Lustig references. Lustig is an alarmist idiot. Please read Alan Aragon.

Consumption of Fructose and High Fructose Corn Syrup Increase Postprandial Triglycerides, LDL-Cholesterol, and Apolipoprotein-B in Young Men and Women. The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism August 17, 2011 jc.2011-1251
    http://goo.gl/jfmxn

The subjects were fed 20% (maybe25%) of their daily cals in HFCS, they were sedentary and a huge confounder is they had ad lib intake in their outpatient phase of the study.

Rule # 20 of the 25 rules of quackery- Claim That Sugar Is a Deadly Poison.

Many quacks would have us believe that sugar is "the killer on the breakfast table" and is the underlying cause of everything from heart disease to hypoglycemia.

The fact is, however, that when sugar is used in moderation as part of a normal, balanced diet, it is a perfectly safe source of calories and eating pleasure. Sugar is a factor in the tooth decay process, but what counts is not merely the amount of sugar in the diet but how long any digestible carbohydrate remains in contact with the teeth. This, in turn, depends on such factors as the stickiness of the food, the type of bacteria on the teeth, and the extent of oral hygiene practiced by the individual

I agree. I'm following the EAT To LIVE program for much of the same reasons. The Standard American Diet= Standard American Diseases such as heart disease, cancer, auto immune diseases and Type 2 Diabetes. I want to do everything I can to continue living a healthy life. Healthy food with tons of fresh fruits and veggies is key. More info can be found at www.drfuhrman.com. Most people are in denial and don't want to hear it. That's fine. Just be prepared for the standard American disease process then.

Thank you for the heads up about the "Sixty Minutes" segment tomorrow. Also for the post about "Eat to Live" by Dr. Fuhrman..Found that book and program an ideal one to follow..I really try my best and sometimes get off the track and try hard to get right back on the road to good health!
