I am not sure if I have an eating disorder.

Note from MFP Moderator:

I know what people are going to say. We can't give you a diagnosis (I know!), go see a doctor. But I can't see a doctor without paying money, at least that I know of. And I don't have a job since I'm in high school. Just give me an idea, if yall think it's bad, I might find a doctor some how. But I dont want to go to the doctor, and they just look at me like "You're fat. How can you be anorexic?"
Anywho.. here's my facts or whatever.

Height: 5ft 6in
Weight: On a bad day, 106, on a good day, 104.

-Always freezing (and i live in the south)
-Heart burn all the time
-Constant worry about weight
-I cant eat something without knowing the calories and nutrition facts
-I check my weight a few times a day.
-Technically, I eat below my caloric intake should be.
-Black circles under my eyes (someone said this has to do with my weight..)
-Bony hips
-feel dizzy a lot
-fainted a few times

Please help :) thank you

I am damned sure a doctor would not think that, because at 5ft 6in tall and at that weight, you are far from fat.

Nobody can give you a diagnosis on here as they are not sitting in front of you.

Can't give a diagnosis, but considering you're underweight and still think you're fat, I'd say yes.

Money thing is tough, and THIS IS WHY I HATE AMERICA. But like, don't your parents have health insurance? Shouldn't a trip to the doctor be covered under it?

Highschool should have a nurse/counselor you could go to?

It's sad you can't just call a doctor when you need one. This website makes me thank god for the NHS every day!
  • i cant tell u if ur anorexic but it sure sounds like your not happy.

    1. go to a doctor!
    2. start eating the calories that you're body is supposed to have, whatever MFP tells you to eat
    3. its good that you're tracking calorites/nutritional info. but do not undereat and eat healthy food
    4.take some vitamens daily

Since you are worried about money, why not start with your school counselor or church person(minister, priest or whatever)? They can get you a push in the right direction and might even be able to help out with the money.

Please go talk to a school counselor. They are free and can help you find other free resources in your community.

    Point one,
If what you said is true, then you do have an eating disorder.

    Point two,
    You aren't fat at all.

    Point three,
Contrary to what many people think, there are many ways to get therapy paid for.
Many clinics have charities associated with them that cover the costs.

Yep, definitely get help. Those are all symptoms, and I know, because I've been there; at 17, I was dancing 20+ hours a week, eating under 1000 calories most days, and was between 108 and 111, at 5'9". Even if you aren't officially diagnosed with anorexia, you still need help with the disordered eating patterns you're exhibiting. I think one of my biggest warning signs is lying about eating food, while actually hiding it in a napkin or somewhere and throwing it away. When your issues start interfering with your life -- you start avoiding friends and parties so you don't have to eat, or you're constantly stressed and lying about food -- you need to get help. Since you're still in school, talk to your guidance counselor. They might be able to refer you to someone who can help, and I found it was easier than talking to my parents.

The fact that you're thinking about getting help is a good sign though. Keep listening to that part of your brain, and tell the other parts of your brain to shut the **** up. You'll be amazed how much energy you'll gain when you start giving your body the nutrition it needs. Your life will be so much easier and you'll feel like you actually have your **** together -- it'll be easier to pay attention in class, get your homework done, and participate in sports or after-school activities.

No doctor would ever call you fat with those stats. Is it an issue with not having insurance as to why you won't see a doctor? I know you said money is an issue because you are in high school and have no job. Do your parents know how you feel and what specifically caused you to start feeling that you are fat? Was it something someone said? (my gymnastics coach telling me to lay off the pizza and the pasta and poking me in the stomach started my issues). I'm just curious to how this all came up for you and why you feel like you can't go talk to a professional. I think you already know that something isn't quite right.

I am a consultant for many health care clinics that provide health care for everyone, whether or not they can pay. They can do this because AMERICANS DONATE MONEY for this to happen. Those that can afford to, pay voluntarily for those that can't.

Hi, I'm wondering if you can speak with your parents or a sibling at all about your concerns? If not, is there a teacher or guidance counselor you feel comfortable to speak with?

It's a good idea to reach out to others. Sounds like finding my fitness pal can help you see how little or how much you are eating and help you to adjust what you're eating to be at a healthy amount so that you can thrive.

Just the fact that you are concerned should be reason enough to seek help. I applaud you.

I am a school nurse and in my opinion you definitely need to see a doctor. Does your school have a nurse? If not, talk with you school counselor. Either one of them should be able to help you find a clinic or doctor. You might also want to contact your local Health Department and see what resources they have available. On a positive note, the fact that you recognize that there might be a problem is a good thing. I hope you find the support you need.

Copy and print your post, put it in an envelope and go hand it to your high school counselor, saying I wrote this about myself. There are people in your life that can help you with this. The most obvious indication to me that you need some help in gaining a better perspective on things is that the difference beetween a good day and a bad day is two pounds. You do not have to live like this. All you HAVE to do is ask for help and keep asking until you get it.

Okay dear, I am not a doctor, and can by no means tell you if you have an ED or not. But I am a "recovered" anorectic. At my lowest weight I was 93 lbs, and I am 5'4...my recommendation would be to try and see a doctor soon, just to get your general health checked out. Having an eating disorder is a hard hard hard thing to go through, mentally, physically, and emotionally...I would hate to see anybody go through it, so you should try to seek a doctors opinion. Who knows? You could just be anemic, or have other things affecting your health...but seeing a doctor in your near future sounds like a good idea to me. You can msg me if you need anything, btw, I hope you get to feeling better soon.

I am really scared about telling someone about this. But my boyfriend has been begging me to for ages and I owe it to him atleast, even if I don't want to.

I'm scared if the person says I'm not anorexic, like all this has gone to waste somehow. I know that's really dumb thinking.
I'm scared if the person says I am anorexic. I can't really handle that.

Does anyone know what kind of person I should go to.. I'm scared the school will call my parents, but I'm 18 so I guess they cant?
Can I just go to a regular medical doctor, like one I go to for check ups?

Thank you for your support. I'm just.. feeling weird about finally admitting this.

I would echo what others here have said. You need to speak to a doctor or someone at your school. The fact you have posted here, suggests you know that the way you are eating is not healthy. Surely you can see yourself, that at your height and weight, you cannot possibly be fat? I think you probably can see that. As a still struggling ex anorexic, I would say, it can take over your life so totally, and your health never truly recovers from it. I dropped down to 70Ibs at 5'11 and it almost killed me more than once.

It is a hellish thing, once it gets past the point of return, and there is a point of return.
My experiences of it have left me prone to slipping back into being totally obsessed and consumed by my weight whenever things get stressful or emotional for me, and it is such a big waste of life that could be spent doing wonderful, amazing and much more fulfilling and useful things.

Life is so very short, and before you know it, you could be 40, and looking back sadly at the years you wasted fixating on weight and size, and the life you missed out on.

It is your choice in the end, to get a grip on this now, and take control, or to let this control you and steal your life away.

Being told you are not anorexic, would not somehow be a waste...it is not an achievement to be anorexic, if anything, imo, it is a failure to find other means of dealing with life.

What is the true waste, is the time you are spending on the scale and on punishing your body instead of learning to nurture it and to embrace it.

I said America, not AmericanS. As in, I hate any system that leaves poor people without healthcare (unless provided for by charity). I am aware that free clinics and stuff exist, but only out of the good of some individuals hearts, and if you can't access a free clinic, or people decide to stop donating, you're screwed, as far as I'm aware.

    Everyone deserves health care.

Perhaps I worded it wrong, perhaps I should have said "This is one of the things I hate about the American system".
So I apologize if anyone took from that, "I hate all americans and you are all losers and I hop you die in the eternal fire selfish greedy twats".

But damn healthcare for all is a pretty basic right.

Sorry this has gotten off topic OP, basically, just talk to someone.

Please tell someone. A counselor, your parents, a teacher. And if they don't help, please tell someone else.

Here is a blog about folks with eating disorders:

You're below a healthy bmi and sounds like you might have some ED tendencies. Someone mentioned free mental health care already and I suggest looking into that as well! Also, talk to your parents!!

Your BMI is in the underweight range, you're not fat, so NO Dr should ever call you fat at this weight, if they do then they are the ones with some kinda disorder!!
Secondly try and eat a bit more if you can slowly, and weigh yourself less, gradually do these things and don't be afraid to ask your friends/family for help too. Perhaps set a goal of a BMi of 19 to start with/ thats in the borderline healthy weight range. (18.5-24.9)
if you feel you can't do it, then talk to somebody who can help you as the others have suggested, but please don't be afraid to ask for help. That's what they are there for. :)
Hope you succeed and beat your demons x
