Meaning of "Salt Equivalent"?

We're stationed in Italy and on some packages of food under sodium it has two numbers:
"Sodio" = Sodium (On this package is has a value of 6mg)
"equivalente in sale" = salt equivalent (15mg)

Does anyone know what "salt equivalent" means and which value I should be using when I tracking my food? It's more of a curiosity than anything,

In the US and no doubt a number of other countries they tend to refer to sodium instead of salt which is more common elsewhere.

One gram of sodium is the equivalent of 2.5 gram of salt.

Dependent upon your location/source of reference, recommended/maximum intakes may refer to sodium or salt.

    6 mg of sodium = 15 mg of salt ie 6 x 2.5.
