What should be my net calories?

Since joining MFP I've lost 2 lbs. I happy about that, but for some reason I seem to have stopping losing. One of my friends suggested that I eat more and I've seen that a lot of people do eat more and lose weight so over this past weekend I started doing that and haven't seen a change. I haven't lost anything, but I haven't gained either. I understand that it takes time for a body to get used to a change so I'm okay with it. My question is how much more should I eat? In one post I read that I should eat 10 times my weight which would be about 1900 calories. If I do eat 1900 calories and burn let's say around 300 calories (to reach the limit MFP gave me of 1650) should I eat those calories back to be at 1900? Or just let it be and stay at my MFP limit? I never knew losing weight would be so complicated!! :ohwell:

  • I also just looked at my BMR (1500 ish) and it's lower than my MFP calorie limit (1650). Do I eat the 1650, exercise and eat those calories back? Or eat 1900 (10 times my weight) exercise and eat those calories back? Eat 1900, exercise, don't eat the calories back? Eat the 1500 ish, exercise and eat the calories back? This is so confusing!!

I'm not an expert BUT I think you should eat at LEAST you BMR, after exercise. I.e lets say your BMR is 1550 and you eat 1670 cals but burnt 300 thru exercise your net would be 1370 so you should eat at least enough to bring your net calories up to your BMR of 1550! Yes you'll lose weight eating less BUT in the long run its not good! Your body needs fuel to live x

Get your net calories as close to what MFP has suggested for you as possible.

What works for one person won't always work for another.

When you set up MFP it has taken into account a calorie deficit based on the weight loss goal per week you selected. That's why you add in your exercise and it tells you to eat more.

Have you been eating your exercise calories before? If you have and you have stopped losing make sure you are calculating them properly (MFP tends to overestimate calories burned so most people suggest eating about 2/3 of them back - make sure you are selecting the intensity properly and the timing).

Experiment and see what works best for you! I had more luck eating more. Some people need to eat less. Good luck!

I used to do Weight Watchers, and they say you can eat your exercise calories if you'd like, but you don't have to. You do need to eat your daily recommended calories! If you feel you need to jump start your metabolism, you can do 7 days of 1200 calories, but no more. If you eat less than your body needs, it will go into starvation mode and start storing everything you eat. I had the same issue a while back, and I went to the doctor about it. I found out I had a metabolic issue and that's why I couldn't lose anything. So maybe call your doctor if you still don't have anything coming off?

Okay so in my case my BMR is about 1500. If I eat 1650 calories and burn off 400, I'll be at 1250. So I should eat 250 calories to get back to my BMR? Is that right?

This is what confuses me though. My calorie limit that MFP gave me is 1650 which is higher than my BMR. Do I go by my BMR or MFP?

Eat to your BMR I believe! And if your like me you'll feel hungrier when you're burning all those calories! Give it a go for at least 3-4 weeks and tweak if it's not working for you but you have to give your body chance to get used to it x

It's really about your activity niveau as well. I'm heavier than you and also I'm not all that active during the day. My calorie goal is 1430 (net) ... It works fine for me, tbh I can't eat MORE than that, unless I stuff in snacks and other unhealthy stuff.

Check your activity level and so on.
