I'm not at the point of needing hormones. The doctor thinks I can kick my metabolism into gear with diet and exercise.
I don't know how different my diet needs to be because of this.

I'm only 21 years old and wasn't really expecting to deal with this so soon.

Is there anyone with experience in losing weight despite hypothyroidism? I could really use some pointers.

Oddly, I have never had any trouble losing weight, in spite of hypothyroidism requiring daily 100mcg medication.
I was diagnosed at about 28.

You may want to look into using coconut oil. I've been hypo for almost 10 years now. Recently, I ran across information on the benefits of coconut oil and the thyroid. From what I've read, 3 Tablespoons a day are beneficial. I've been using the coconut oil for about three weeks now and am seeing improvements from my energy levels to finally kick starting my weight loss. You may want to look at the following site www.coconutdiet.com/thyroid_health.com or google thyroid and coconut oil.
  • I was diagnosed with hypo-t years ago. I had all the classic symptoms but my actual levels were not that far off normal... so they put me on the lowest Synthroid dosage possible, and it regulated me back into the normal range... barely. However, it didn't improve my symptoms at all. Eventually the doctor said he wasn't going to increase the dosage just to get rid of the symptoms since the numbers were fine, and we agreed that it wasn't worth me spending the money for the meds every month. I've debated seeing another specialist now that it's been like 7 years. Since being diagnosed, I've gained about 70lbs - but that was over the course of many years. I think I was diagnosed at 22 years old, and I'm now 33. Went from 120lbs to 190lbs.

I guess that wasn't really helpful, sorry lol. I'm hoping to find some helpful answers here too! I sometimes wonder - if I'd been more careful about my diet and exercise, could I have beaten the hypo-t symptoms... would love to find out if it's possible.
