koay so we will kick of with new shoes because I have had them a while and maybe they need renewing. What specialist running shoe shops are there in the UK?
There are lots, depends where you are based! Try Sweatshop, Runner's Need, Run and Become or Up And Running or check the Runner's World UK website for shops near you.

Oh dear....I have never heard of any of these and I spend a lot of time shopping ha....I will google them all now and see if they are close to me. I am in Wales by the way with the closest places for shopping being Cardiff or Swansea anything surrounding those is good for me too!

I just got fitted for new running shoes (I took back the first pair they fit me with and got a different pair). I ran last night for the first time without shin pain! It was awesome! It does sound like shin splints so first, get fitted for shoes. Then, perhaps back down on your running a little. I am doing C25K and was about to move onto the 5th week. Instead, I went back to week 3 and while it wasn't as challenging as I would have liked, my shins didn't hurt. So I'm going to take things VERY slowly and build up my muscles.

one other question on specialist running shops and be warned this may make me look very stupid but do they make you run in them? What I mean by this is I am short and fat and whilst I love running and don't care who sees me running out and about in the confines of a small shop I may actually die of embarrasment!

In Cardiff there's a Run and Become and a runingshop called Moti. And yes you have to run in them so the fitters know they're right for your gait! Some places have treadmills, others ask you to run round the shop or outside. Wear a sports bra and bring socks. No-one will stare or laugh, I promise!

I will hold you to that :) ! I'm off on holidays for two weeks so this may give me some extra motivation to get my *kitten* in gear so that I don't look like a drip ha!

For the first time in years I've been injury free. I attribute it to 1) new shoes, 2) cross training (boot camp, weight lifting, lots of core strengthening 3) lots of water 4) two total rest days a week 5) lots of stretching 6) increasing my miles no more than 10% a week.

Good luck, hope you feel better soon!
