- So a friend of mine and I have been talking for some time about trying cross fit. After a long debate in my head I have decided after work to go on down to our local crossfit and look around. The place I have called has offered 3 free classes before I sign up.
I have workout out a lot over the last year and I am looking for something diffrent to try for a while. I need a challenge that will help shape my body.

I am intrested in finding out anything you all have done or experanced with Cross Fit. What should I expect? Why do enjoy this brand of exercise? Any suggestions you would like to share would be greatly appricated.

Thanks. Ali

This is a pretty fair and impartial overview of Crossfit.

I started in January and LOVE it!

It's good they give you a chance to try it out first, my gym did the same for a week.

It really seems to depend a great deal on the gym and trainers, it is variable from place to place. So the only thing you can do is try it out and ask around if you have more than one gym in your area.

Things that keep me going back:

Our coach/trainer Chad: He knows his stuff, gets excited about nutrition and technique, and is a WONDERFUL cheerleader and motivator

The group atmosphere: I've alwas done best with classes, show up at a certain time and you'll all do it together. When I go to the gym by myself and I don't push myself hard enough and I don't really know what all to do.

The variability: I don't get bored! There are core skills you learn but we rarely do the same routine twice, and when we do it's nice to see how far you've come.

Measurable results: As above, I like to see my progress in concrete terms. I get really stoked about being able to lift/move x more pounds or do x more rounds than previously.

Competition: Many people like the comeptiton of stacking up their stats to others in the gym (all friendly). I'm nowhere close to that level but I do enjoy the competition with myself. It's a group thing but all that matters is what you bring to the table and I like to push myself. Right now I'm at the point where I find the slowest or lowest weight on the board and try to beat that, my brother finds the highest or fastest.

The other members: Everyone cheers each other on, talks about nutrition, and is overall very supportive of each other. We have a good time.

And finally, the results: I feel like I'm getting in the best shape of my life and I am quickly reaching the goals I need with regard to running, push-ups, and sit-ups. I have abs in three months that I haven't had in over ten years. My strength and cardiovascular endurance and power is dramatically improved.

Expect to be challenged physically and mentally, expect to be sore, and expect to be proud of what you can accomplish.

Sorry this was so long but I wanted to try and address all your questions.

Not all the gyms and trainers are the same so use some commen sense with regard to what you feel comfortable with. It doesn't suit every personality (as has been shown on other threads about it) but give it a chance and you may love it.
  • I've been doing crossfit for the past 8 years. My recent crossfit endeavor was the formation of the Crossfit UC Davis club with my friends. It started out with me and a buddy working out on our own, but slowly our friends started showing interest and began joining us for workouts. The club as expanded from it's humble beginnings of two members to it's flourishing 70 consistently attending members! Here's a link to the blog post of how it all went down: http://www.eddiedudoit.com/
