Elliptical machine and MFP don't agree

There seems to be a significant difference between what the elliptical machine at the gym and MFP when it comes to calories burned.
MFP claims that I burned 500 or so calories, the machine claims about 300 for the 33 minutes I spent training.
Just to make sure I'm not being a total dumbdumb, the machine I'm calling an elliptical has the handles for arm movement as you stand and move your legs forward. Ive seen other machines without the moving arm handles called elliptical trainers a well (my reason for clarifying the machine type).
Thanks in advance!

Both are items that are not connected to your body - and therefore cannot measure you properly.

I agree with above if you really want to know what you burned get an HRM. Otherwise pick one and stick to it as the source for everything.0

after getting a heart rate monitor i found mfp was closer than the machine says but the hrm is the best0
