Muscle Memory and Weight Lifting

Hi guys! I did a search before this, but I apologize if I have missed a similar topic. How true is muscle memory when it comes to fitness and lifting weights? I'm an 18 year old female that's been out of HS for two years (almost) now, and back in school I was big on the heavy weights- squats, deadlifts, bench presses, etc. I killed it in the weight room, and I loved it. I graduated, stopped working out, got into LPN school, and became soft, fat, and weak. I'm four weeks into a fitness program now, Turbo Fire (to condition my cardio and drop some flub before starting P90X or Insanity) and adding in extra body weight exercises. Based upon my previous experience with weights and fitness, do my muscles have that memory to get stronger faster, or does my body start from the beginning? I wish I took some sports science classes at Uni, this is all so fascinating. Thank you, and I apologize again if this is an oft discussed topic.
