For Vegans, How hard was it to make the switch?

I am been a meat all my life and my family has a devout love for meat, but I really want to switch to a vegan lifestyle, not necessarily for the ethics but for the pure health benefits and the improvement of my quality of life. I just don't know how to break it to my family and my husbands family. I don't want to make them feel uncomfortable or to make fun of me at family events, because I am not eating most of their food.
I don't really have a devout love for any meat or cheese or dairy products, or eggs, maybe gummy bears but that's about it. I really love fruits and veggies and beans and nuts, so I know I can eat but its the family part that I really worry about.
Any suggestions would be helpful?
Is it rude to prepare something and take to friends and families houses for dinner parties?
