The forums list topics by which has been responded to most recently. Posting 'bump' moves a topic into the top spot.0 -

I agree with BillyC, but I also think people are putting in a cursory "reply" so that it shows up on their "My Topics" list. Most of the time, I don't think the "bumper" really cares if it's at the top of the list or not. In fact, some even say, "Bump to read later" or something.0

Back in the early 90's when the interwebs were all shiny and fascinating, people used to use bump and save...
*bump* to move to the top of the list
*save* to keep in your conversations to reference back to at a later date.
save seems to have fallen by the wayside.0 -

Because remembering something and hitting search is too taxing for some people.0

Some people 'bump' their own topic if they haven't gotten any or enough responses. That way more people will see it and might respond.0

I use it so that it appears in my topics so that I can find it again / read later etc...0

The KONY 2012 campaign gets $1 every time someone does it. Also, it raises awareness of breast cancer.0

BUMP. A small lump of any powdered drug (i.e. cocaine, ketamine, heroin).
I'm gonna take this bump to the dome right quick and get to feeling good0 -

Bump's original meaning is "Bring Up My Post", basically moving the topic to the first page when it's not getting any replies or is slow.
Here bump seems to be used both for that purpose, though usually someone other than the thread starter doing it, or as a way for people to somehow "bookmark" that thread for later reading through/use rather than, say, actually bookmarking it or leaving it open in a separate browser tab.0 -
