i have come to find that most jerky is packed full of sodium. i know i could make my own to cut down on sodium, but i don't have a dehydrator or know how.

just wondering if anyone knows of a brand of low(er) sodium jerky out there available for purchase? i've been eating jack links teriyaki jerky lately and a 1 oz serving has 600 mg sodium. would like something less than that - thanks!!

I don't know of any low-sodium jerky... Salt is part of the process. If you find some let me know, but I'd be interested in what replaces the salt.

Looks like soy sauce and anchovies replace the salt.

and soy sauce contains alot of... salt.

you cant have jerky without it. salt is what helps preserve the meat.

you could try making your own, and eating it immediately.. but without salt you cant store it like you can actual jerky.

I just bought lower sodium jerky from target - I think it had 300mg versus the usual 600mg or so. It was one of the readily available brands that I see at grocery stores all the time, so I was surprised they had a lower sodium version and scooped up a few.

The stuff I get isn't exactly "low" sodium but it isn't crazy high. They are really good and have fruits in them so have all that going (and really low fat). The website is -- http://www.healthysnackin.com/

They are really nice to do business with, super fast shipping and the chicken with Italian seasoning tastes like a pizza! So yummy.

Carnivore Candy is crazy delicious and pretty low in sodium. One flavor is even under 100mg per ounce.

And if you have a Trader Joe's in your area, check out their jerky flavors, most of them have more reasonable sodium levels.

Get a dehydrator. They r not expensive. I have been making my own jerky for years. Everyone tells me it taste's way better than store bought. I marinade mine in sweet baby ray's light bbq sauce and spice it up. Inside round steak in strips, throw them on the dehydrator and flip them once half way through. de-lish!

You don't need a dehydrator - my husband makes his own venison jerky - he grinds the meat up and then uses a jerky gun (can get one for about $15 at amazon - we have the Nesco brand) - We have jerky racks for our oven - so he squirts it on and puts in the oven for a few hours at like 200 degrees...

We use a sodium free seasoning mix or mix our own with various spices and instead of something like soy sauce we use coconut aminos (taste similar but no high sodium). If you use a Cure (if you aren't going to put it in the fridge) that has salt in it...but overall it should be a lot lower than store bought...

You could do the above with just about any type of meat...or if you don't want to grind up the meat you can thinly slice meat, add some spices, marinate it in some coconut aminos and throw it in the oven....you probably do want to have the rack - so the air can get all around the meat...

    YUMMMMM
